That seems like a very low figure.

85k is right in the middle of the middle class

Being middle class and living in Orleans parish would be a big struggle with housing costs and lack of good schools

Same as Ascension parish

Ascension isn't anywhere close to as expensive as Nola

You can buy a Mcmansion in AP for 350k

I'm not trying to argue with you. Just saying that couple probably doesn't live in Nola due financial constraints and the schools.

Hell that's even happened in BR in the past 30 years. It's mostly become poor and upper middle class/rich. That family lives in Denham Springs now.

Well then consider yourself schooled. If you live in Orleans parish then you live in one of the few

I don’t need you to tell me about the social classes in a city I lived in for years, but I’m glad you read a few articles on the subject matter and know better

I agree completely. They go wherever they can most comfortably live above their means.

Someone mentioned the McMansions in AP. Full of people living in a big arse house driving an hour each way, and praying to God the schools stay good and white.

I don't blame them. Dutchtown is one of the best schools in the state. The commute is the price that you pay.

We only have one kid in school but if we had more we'd probably live in AP or somewhere like that. My kid's tuition is 12k per year and about another 2-3k for aftercare.

Go to the Rouses on Carrollton in Mid City. Its the definition of middle class.

24k in housing. Means a 300k house, easily.

Taxes and insurance can easily cost you half of that depending on where you live

I wouldn't blame you. Like I said, AP governement allows to live a better life beyond their means. Funding schools better than they do infrastructure.

Not completely the parishes fault. The residents are too ignorant to realize how they are killing the long term viability. Also don't realize that they could do a lot to prevent the recent trashy developments moving in as well as improve their situation.

Most can't afford a tax increase though. Unless it is for the children.

There are other options too. It really depends on where you work. Central, Zachary and LP all have good public schools. That's where BR has lost a lot of middle class to.

I'd imagine Nola is similar. I haven't lived there in almost 20 years though.

This isn't unique to Nola though. The middle class in the Houston metro don't live in the city. They live 30 miles outside of it in Katy or some other burb.

I would say the burbs are more homogeneous with middle and upper middle. With a healthy dose of extremely poor. And yes, holds true in most areas.

The statement that started this was that NOLA has no middle class. Which is absurd.

Part of urban life that is great is you aren't looking at people who are exactly like you. Different experiences and different interactions.

Nola has a middle class, just not a big one relative to the poor.

Wow now that I look, houses in Metairie by Bucktown are selling 200 per square ft. Thats insane, the worst houses are 300k.

Assuming you are insinuating that the private school is the crusher. So, you have to give me the benefit of the doubt and assume one made it into one of the magnet programs. Although getting in is pretty easily done.

So 85k means you are bringing home roughly 55-58 (i think).

10k for tuition (assuming your not going to get any breaks)

We are down to 48k.

24k in housing. Means a 300k house, easily.

Down to 24k.

5k a year in auto. 1k additional in gas and maintenance.

Down to 18k.

600/month in groceries.

Down to 10k for discretionary.

Im sure you will destroy my numbers because they are a bit conservative, but there are plenty of middle class families doing it here so from your side it will be like arguing the moon doesn't exist.

No married filing jointly couple is paying that much in taxes.

People figured out you could live in Lakeview without dealing with Orleans Parish bullshite. What's odd is Lakeview prices are still insanely high.

Great part of town. You can put another $250k in it and sell for $800+ or live in it of course. I would eat Domalisies (sp) every day.

Was almost my exact estimate. Really wanted to be all in at 500k, but the sellers are understandably staying high. Going to be a flipper come in with a lot of cash.
