About a month ago, my daughter had to be transported to children's hospital via ambulance. She stayed 3 nights. I get the bill from ambulance and its 3800. My insurance paid 500.
I have Bluecross insurance and it was billed as out of network. There has been issues with previous ambulatory service not accepting bluecross so the county decided to go to a company that took bluecross.
I have a job where I know a few people. I just happened to know 2 people that are on the ambulatory service board. I contacted them and both said that the contract signed stated specifically that the company will make all reasonable efforts to be in network for all major insurance providers, It went to specify that the company will be innetwork for blue cross unless reimbursement falls below 225% of medicare allowable for the current year, which both contacts said it has not.
I was able to get a copy of the signed contract signed by the COO of that ambulatory company. I contacted Blue Cross who stated the ambulance company has not filed to be in network.
I asked for that in writing but blue cross stated that they cant provide that but that its on my EOB as out of network. I contacted the billing department of the Ambulatory company and they said they solely operate out of network. I confronted them about the contract and they called me a liar and stated they never sign contracts with clauses like that. They gave me an email and I then sent them a copy of the signed contract. No response but its only been 2 days.
My contact on the board then contacted his guy that works for the ambulance company and she stated that they dont sign those contracts but was shown the signed contract and was surprised. He then stated there is no way we should have signed that. Then went on to say he would make some phone calls.
No updates yet.
Im worried about how many other people have just blindly paid the bill or in collections over ambulance service bill in my county. I was told I was the first person to say anything. I have proof of everything.
Its pretty wild honestly
EDIT to add that they are the only ambulatory service for our county. There are no other options

Is it though?
Seems pretty standard practice in our healthcare system.
Why is "out of network" even a fricking thing?

Sounds like a multi million dollar case

I don’t think they can send you to collections over a medical bill. Not once you pay it with your credit card you’re screwed. Also asked for an itemized bill (they are required by law to provide) if you do pay ask them for a discount then ask for their interest free payment plan.

Not sure if it's applicable to your situation but perhaps research the No Surprises Act. It's a federal law about surprise billing from healthcare providers. Good luck

I had an ambulance transport billed for $5k in St. Tammany. Same shite about Out of Network. I called United Healthcare and asked about it. The call wasn’t four minutes long and they said “we will take care of it.” Subsequently spoke to ambulance billing and they said it was handled. It was strange. Almost as if they sent the bill to see if I would pay and then made the bill disappear as soon as I asked about it.

Ambulance companies love to stay out of network so they can pull this shite

Yeah for all the faults that other healthcare systems have, this is something they have figured out. "Out of network" billing shouldn't exist. The fact that you can go to a hospital in network, have a surgeon in network, have a surgery covered by insurance, but the guy who handed the anesthesiologist the potassium to paralyze you was out of network, so you'll be paying that $5000 out of pocket, is ridiculous

Probably because they know most people in your county have BC and frick y'all thats why

When i called blue cross they said i could file an appeal and stated that the ambulance service is the only option for our county. Which im in the process of filing an appeal with blue cross.

Are all the “ambulatory’s” in you post supposed to be “ambulance”?

I have no issue with "out of network" as providers are able to negotiate with insurance companies. But that implies some choice, which you do have in most facets of your healthcare.
That does not apply with ambulance services and emergency rooms. It is moronic that you could be in an accident, where you have no choice which ambulance service picks you up or which emergency room they take you to, and this could potentially cost you thousands of dollars extra.
Edit to add as was pointed out in an above post: Everyone billing from a specific facility should have to be "in network". You shouldn't be able to have multiple in and out of network providers during the same surgery.

The ol classic contract defense of "there's no way we should've signed that."

I mean, this is probably a pivotal part of their "business plan."

100%
because there are people that just pay it without questioning or even looking at the bill
and those people are supplementing the people that just throw all medical bills in the trash
