It's roughly 10K a year now.

I remember my last semester was $1350. The good ole mid 90's.

No kidding. He got into several schools with "better" reps but the only ones offering substantial money were the two I listed. He got a 30% scholly to Boston U but the difference was still a small fortune.

I went to LSU from out of state after attending a small, private high school.

Can't recommend the experience enough.

Like someone pointed out earlier, it all depends on the type of person he is. I went to a very small private college my first year, then transferred to LSU. There is a huge difference. First off, the small school, obviously, isn't nearly as "fun", but with that being said, it is MUCH easier to stay on track. You are surrounded by people we came there to get an education, which helps a ton. Obviously the same can be said about LSU, but you have to actually find those people, everyone in your classes will not be like that.

Are you a DR? Not to pry, but there is a reason why some ridiculous percentage of Dr's children make it through med school. They see every day the amount of work their parents put in. The work doesn't change after med school, if anything, it gets more intensive. If you think he will stay focused send him to LSU, the experience will be MUCH greater, and tradition has no rivals. It will also give him a (small) advantage to LSU med, if he chooses to go there. Good luck to him and you!

The undergrad experience will be what he makes of it. If he is gonna be pre-med, it doesn't really matter where he goes for undergrad academically. You can get into Harvard or Johns Hopkins or wherever from LSU if you put in the work.

The entire weight of the decision should be placed on the cultures of the schools/campuses. He should go to the place he will enjoy more. I get that this affects how he treats his academics, but no fricking way should he go to Spring Hill over LSU because their pre-med program is marginally better or vice versa. frick that.

Spring Hill honestly isn't a prestigious enough school for prestige to play a roll in the decision.

HOWEVER, the difference between LSU and Spring Hill is in the experience. Small school vs. big will drastically change your kid's college experience.

I went the small college route and it was the right decision for me.

Shite, I would do backflips just to pay $10K and would not mind one bit writing that check to LSU.

Does he have his head on straight? If he knows how to balance go to the cheaper state school and have a good time, but hit the books. I went to UF and I didn't flunk out but still drank and got laid on the reg. Now THAT is a subtle brag.

I went to high school right next to Springhill College and know several that ended up going there. It's a good college. Great teachers, average campus. Student body is pretty nice.

If you're worried about your son missing out on the "large" campus experience, South Alabama is literally a couple miles down the road. Springhill and USA student intermingle on a daily basis.

On the same note, if you think your son will be a more diligent student because he's at such a small school with fewer distractions...South Alabama is literally a couple miles down the road.

Congrats to your son. Whichever choice he makes, he'll make the best of it

Don't get to flattered by 101k in scholarships.

You know how department stores mark up the cost of the clothes and are constantly having 50%-66% off sales.

Colleges do this as well.

I bet the vast majority of Spring Hill students are getting large scholarships.

I say this as a graduate of LSU and a higher ed administrator:

If your son is mature enough to handle the distractions of a large school like LSU, save the coin and go there.

However, SHC will deliver a great education without the distractions, and he may be able to get done in 3-3.5 years, especially if he has some prior credit.

I'm a fan of the small college undergrad/large college grad/professional model. But its not for everyone.

Is SHC the only option? Millsaps is offering a shite ton of money right now and they have an excellent pre-med program. That being said, SHC is great for the right student.
