You’ve already made up your mind by this post. You have done well the name doesn’t matter.

:-)
That dog just found you. Don’t let him down.
Just like my semi-retarded dogs found me. We love and tolerate them like others might not.

Any advice for this breed? Tips? Tricks? When to train?
Been so long since I’ve had a dog. A mix of nervous and excited. I can still remember my good dogs, but the memories have faded over the years.
I think I need him just as much as he needs me

My parents got me a datsun when I was in the first grade.
She died peacefully when I was a junior in college.
She was a great friend. I'm almost 50 and I still miss her.
Good decision to keep the dog.

The dachshund in him will have a back susceptible to injury. Getting them used to using steps or ramps up to high places like beds or some couches helps. I'm not sure how the mix of the breeds will effect the back, though.
Find a good vet you trust, and talk to them. Get the kids involved with the care and understanding of what the dog needs.
Dachshunds can be stubborn to train, but house breaking isn't too difficult. A schedule helps, the pup and the kids. Start with pads if necessary, and be patient.
In all likelihood, the good boy will be your's (particularly if he bonds with you), though will love the kids, too.

Don’t over feed. Crate train, crate train, crate train!
Wake up = go out
Eat = got out
Drink = go out
Play for longer than 20 mins = go out
Sniff the ground more than twice = go out
About to cuddle up = go out
Over praise and give a training treat when they potty outside. If pup is unsupervised it stays in the crate. Not too big of a crate and no food or water inside. Overnights are trickier because they do need water but even that should be phased out at a certain age. I potty trained a teeny chihuahua and about 20 labradors that way. When we bred our labradors people picked up a 7 week old potty trained dog. I actually had them on puppy pads in the whelping box at about 3 weeks. Then I could get them to run out to the grass at about 4-5 weeks. Of course accidents happen, but it’s amazing what keeping a clean area and good habits teaches a puppy.

My opinion doesn’t mean anything but I lose respect for people who give dogs away. Stick to your commitment.

That dog looks like a Riot to me.
Name him Riot in honor or when you got him.

When did I waver?
I hadn’t made any commitment before this thread. I’m not Helmet.
The universe gave me his name because it wanted me to have him. To be his master when he needed one. And once it gave me a name it would be wrong to turn my back.
And I’m not.

Our beagle, Chipper, was 10 last year and my wife's baby. Someone had an 8-week old rescue beagle puppy and she just wanted to "look at it". So last July, we ended up with Arnie.

Name it Coon, bc it kind of looks like a raccoon.
Plus, it's short and won't sound corny when you're calling for him to come inside.
