Dude can't walk at all (has no feeling or control of back legs), and generally he seems bummed a lot of the times. He was once a very athletic dog, protecting the family from natural disasters and wildlife. When my siblings were home for Christmas, he seemed super happy. Loved his toy we got him, and generally just loved hanging out with everyone. It's tough to be decisive about this. Every time the fricker looks like he wants to quit on life, he will be super happy hanging out for several hours. I am headed back to Houston this week (parents live in Dallas). So it's decision time.

He still eats although not as much (not surprising since he doesn't do much physical activity).

He does have problems going to the bathroom, as someone kinda has to make sure he gets outside. This can be a pain, and will be a pain when my siblings (college) and I are back out of the house.

Final point is that this dude does a great job dragging his arse around at the vet, so the idea of putting him down hasn't even been mentioned by our vet. I'm sure if I do take him in tomorrow, she will charge me with animal cruelty while he does hand stands in her office.

What says the OT?

If he is struggling doing the things that dogs do, put him down

Thanks, man. It is going to suck big time. I cried like hell when we put our last dog down about 8 years ago (who got along great with this current dog). I think I will be a little more under control this time, but it's going to suck.

what is the problem with him? Why has he lost use of his back legs?

honestly, every time I have had to make this decision, I have felt that I waited too long in retrospect.

I'm serious. We put one down 2 months ago. It is tough.

He has damage on his spine that is irreparable. Basically two discs that are blocking nerve flow or something. Dude thought he was a mountain goat for too long. It was a gradual loss. It has only been the last month that he really is not very mobile, although he still likes people to wheelbarrow him across the yard (front legs work great).

That's the really shitty thing about all of this. He is still super healthy apart from the legs. We got him a wheelchair, but he won't use it.

Can he use one of those wheel chair contraptions. I know someone whose rottweiler had a similar issue and they kept him around another year or so with one of those.

Put my down last month. Have someone come out to the house and do it. Shockingly having him go in my lap, in the yard he loved, was very therapeutic in the end.

Maybe you just need to force him to do it like you're training a puppy to walk on a leash or to climb stairs?

Dogs can get arthritis and he may be in pain.
But the good thing is, you can give him low doses of aspirin. I'd try something before I'd just give up on Old Yeller.
We have a dogwho his issues like yours, and the aspirin has shown some pluses.

If he is still eating and not in obvious pain/discomfort, still too early IMO. I can vouch for how brutal this is though. We put our first dog down a few months ago, which we had before kids even. I cried for like 3 days and still get emotional about it.

I have drug that dude all around the neighborhood with it. He will use it if you force him. But that doesn't translate to actually doing it without you. I sat his arse for over an hour in the living room with that thing the other day, and he refused to move even an inch.

I guess I should have mentioned that he is on an aspirin regimen. He has also been to an animal chiropractor who is famous for working miracles, and that guy eventually said he couldn't move him the other direction anymore. Basically, we have a perfectly healthy dog who can't do anything he likes because of his legs. Such a shitty situation.

That sucks. The only other thing I can think of, and you probably already tried this, is trying treats and rewards. Make using the wheelchair a trick for him to perform. Good luck, it is a shitty situation :prayerssent:
