I knew the passenger. RIP. Hard working oilfield hand. He was making his way well.

You went down in the gulf ? Water survival is the one class I really don’t mind and pay attention to.

My grandfather was an aircraft mechanic and every time I used to talk to him about planes and stuff he would make a point to tell me how dangerous helicopters are and made me swear I'd never get in one.

I dont know how safe they are compared to airplanes or what made him have such a fear of flying in choppers, but they absolutely terrified that man. And he wasn't easily scared. I've wondered what happened to him in the years since he passed to make him so scared.

I always thought it was BS. A helicopter will impact the water pretty damn hard. And if the engine goes out at altitude, everyone on board is a goner. Flipping a simulated cockpit 5mph under water is about the best thing they can do though.

Around 2000 Before the simulator, there was 3 lawn chairs in a pvc frame they would flip upside down.I watched a guy almost drown in 3ft of water in water survival class. They told him 3 times to stand up before they had to help up because he would have drowned. Flipping upside down in the water freaks people out. Just think when the real thing goes down what kind of chaos happens.

This shows how much you don’t know much about helicopters.

IF. A bird falling out of the sky at 2500 ft, are you going to survive that?

99% of the time that wont happen but it could. Besides the amount of flights in the GOM compared to downed helicopters, is really nothing to worry about.

I’m sitting in a meeting right now and they’re talking about the other guy that was supposed to be in the flight but took an extra day off.

They said he’s pretty fricked up over it. His name was on the manifest, but he wasn’t on the flight.

The class is kind of pointless but I did get a kick out of all the fat baws who almost drown after being under water for all of 5 seconds

I get your chances of surviving impact are minimal but if you do it sure is nice to know some pointers on how to get out.

This isn’t true. You would actually want more altitude if the engine were to shut down. The pilot is able to create rotor rotation at that altitude even with a dead engine and safely land
