It’s old fricks from Florida who have ruined this area, not REI hippies.

Old Floridian's are the reason for the 29% increase in homelessness in that area over the last several years?

Artsy types and hippies have been a large part of the fabric of Asheville for my entire life.

Yup. Been going there since the late 80s.

It’s similar to Austin where the OG hippies got replaced by the 21st century hipsters.

I have a buddy who lived in Asheville for several years and ended up moving closer to the coast. A lot of folks have been priced out by folks buying up property for retirement from coastal areas.

We looked at some houses down there when we were there in May and for something the same size as what we have it was about 4 times the cost.

Some condos in and around Biltmore Park (not too far from the Hilton there) was about $500-$600k a piece.

Still plenty of value to be had. I have been looking at a cabin outside boone. Nice area, big lot. 3 bed 2.5 bath. Big basement/game room and big deck. 300k

That is an issue all over NC. I live in Raleigh so I know all too well but it isn't Florida people moving here pricing people out. It's mainly commie Yankees that are moving all over NC.

Lets hope that number stays low. In 2004 the mountains saw over 400 landslide with the named storms.

quote:

The waterlogged soils could hardly handle the additional moisture, finishing the job Frances had started in causing landslides and debris flows. There were about 400 reported between the two storms in North Carolina.

The most significant — and the most deadly — occurred in southeastern Macon County. A debris flow on Fishhawk Mountain rushed 2,200 feet downhill, carrying several feet of mud and 16-ton boulders at speeds of more than 30 mph. When it reached the Peeks Creek community in the valley below, it destroyed 15 homes and killed five people.

This is where a lot of people in mountains run into issues. They feel safe up the mountain knowing the water from the creek/river will not reach them but what is above them can come down quickly on top of them. I have one friend that during Helene lost his house along with neighbors and the road below into the river from a mudslide over the weekend.

Asheville over the last 20-30 years has become a refuge for the newer generations especially the DINKs. They come from all over but since Covid 19 a lot have moved in from CA/west coast as well with the ability to work from home and the influx of people looking to live in a VAX optional state.

Unless from the area you would not realize until the late 80s no one went back downtown due to drugs and crime, especially after dark. The old Block as it was called has restaurants and breweries in the area now, but if not of color back in the day you would not travel there. The Fine Arts theater where the hipsters like to watch movies now is the old XXX theater. The brownstones across the street from the Orange Peel in town were all crack houses. Why in the 70s and early 80s there was a large boom to grow outside the downtown area.

The now River Arts District prior to the 2004 storms/flooding was where white people bought hard drugs and male prostitution was rampant. Why the city was quick to jump on moving in art studios and other businesses there after the 2004 floods. Did not restrict regulations on older building that industry moved out of because they wanted to revamp the area quickly. So ignored flooding issues along with recommendation and it flooded the area even worse this time. Though I am not sure based on the recommendations I saw it would have prevented what we just saw.

The issue with erosion though is the limited restrictions being put on the mountain home building. Vacation homes, semi-retired couples, and whatnot building everywhere on the side of mountains and causing alot of issues to the environment in the area.

If you're not a local, your opinions about WNC communities are worth as much as shitty toilet paper. I personally look forward to the slow of lowlanders from Florida.

Update from the coffee roaster:

Stocking Mill Coffee
@smcroasters

Update

Making a cash and supply run out of town, will try to answer DMs and emails while at it.

Will be headed back in tonight to start clearing up some more.

For those that want to come out and help it’s honestly not hard at all to find something to do.

Grab water, gas, bar and chain oil and a saw….Get off an exit and you’ll see and hear exactly where to go.

BEWARE OF SPEED TRAPS GOING IN.

Seems surrounding areas are trying to capitalize off the traffic coming in.

Also if you’re bringing stuff in. Have a good vehicle and stable trailer and load it properly.

A lot of people with good hearts are stuck and causing more traffic by driving pieces of shite loaded to the brim into a disaster zone and breaking down or crashing.

Regarding donations.

Really sorry we can’t take anymore. There is only so many people I can meet and help in the time I’m here and don’t want to leave with extra resources others need.

I will say if you’re close enough to provide muscle that’s a big need now.

Won’t be hard to find a place that can use it.

To answer questions about negative interaction with government entities in the zone.

I have not had any negative interactions with anyone.

I do see speed traps on highways going in which is ridiculous.

I do have to say that from Katrina to here, I have been to a lot of disaster zones.

Lineman and tree workers seem to be the least busy here.

Other places that’s all you saw and here I oddly see very little.

You sure you want to ski that ice? If you didn't grow up on it setting an edge on a monolithic ice sheet is, well, an experience. That being said I always say if you can ski the WNC slopes you can ski anywhere.

Where are all of these disaster deniers coming from right now? X is filled with idiots who have no idea how bad this region is in and how pitiful the federal governments response is.

A local group of pilots is flying supplies to North Carolina next week. I saw some videos online of people saying they have no way to shower or bathe. I am planning on going to Wal-Mart and Bass Pro this weekend buy some camping showers to send the people up there to use. The pilots say they can't carry flammable items. Are the rechargable batteries in camping showers considered flammable items?

ETA: Yes I know I originally their when I meant there. I have corrected it but I will still go run a lap as punishment.

We live in a time where people legitimately create their own realities. Even when they are presented with indisputable facts they refuse to accept it. It is like they willfully refuse to learn. They've locked on to a few bullshite sources that share the same primary goal......manipulation. They have no desire to verify anything, and will lap up every bit of bullshite they are fed. Nothing can penetrate it.

Depends on the size and type of battery. D.O.T. rules forbid certain size and type of batteries as cargo in passenger aircraft. The grey area is does this apply to Part 91 (aka private ownership) vs Part 135 (on demand charter) vs Part 121 (airlines). When in doubt I wouldn't risk it.
