Yeah, I’ve got 3 family members near Asheville that I’ve been trying to get in touch with all day, but to no avail. Seeing all this damage and not being able to talk to them is the toughest part of it. I’d hit the road right now if I knew I could do something, but no clue how difficult it would be to even get there. Pretty sure I’d have to go through Atlanta because my TN route is out it looks like.

Speak for yourself Easterner....lol

It hasn't stopped raining in the Shoals all day. Now it has been a steady soaking rain, unlike what others are dealing with. I'm not even sure Wilson had the spillways open when I came across O'Neal about 7. The water didn't look like they were open.

I'm more a Centraler. We've had 5/8" all day, and it has been that annoying light rain.

Unfortunately, it was expected

Yep. This was part of the NWS GSP office forecast discussion from Wednesday morning:

quote:

Flash flooding is expected to become widespread in these areas during this time frame, with locally severe and life- threatening flooding likely. By the time the rainfall finally tapers off Friday morning, 48-hour storm totals are expected to range from 5-9 inches across much of the area west of ~U.S. Highway 321, with as much as 15 inches expected on southeastern-facing slopes in the vicinity of the Blue Ridge. At least moderate flooding is also likely to develop on some main stem rivers. (Amounts of 3-5 inches are expected for areas to the east). It`s also looking more likely that we will see numerous landslides in the mountainous counties encompassing the Blue Ridge escarpment...with a couple of large, damaging debris flows/slope failures possible.

I don't think you can even get to Asheville right now.

For me it’s the pictures and special family heirlooms that I treasure. Not worried about “things” other than those.

Saw a post that ETSU was on the way to Citadel for a game tomorrow but are stuck on buses in Asheville. Evidently they wouldn’t change the game time.

We passed a trillion dollar infrastructure and climate resiliency bull two years ago. Apparently dams in North Carolina were not considered essential infrastructure for climate resiliency.

ETA: Did the Walters dam or the LL dam actually fail or did they just overtop?

If it eases your nerves any, just know that it is really hard to get in touch with people during these situations. I know your kind probably goes to the worst possible scenario, but just have faith that they are okay.

At this point I'm pretty sure neither failed.

From NWS Morristown:

And I'll post a tweet about Lake Lure following this one.

They both seem to have been topped pretty significantly, but no actual failures.

ETA: I saw a few other posts saying officials have said LL didn't fail.

Arrow is where I live. Shaded area is my best guess of who flooded from what I’ve seen driving around to friends’ houses(with the exception of some small areas of Snell Isle that seemed ok from afar). Police wouldn’t let us back there so I assume most of it got wrecked.

I have family in that part of Tn. They were ok as of 6:30 this evening. They all live on high ground except for my cousin and her husband. Those two have evacuated to my 101 year old great aunt’s house who lived at the top of the hill they lived on. They just moved into a brand new trailer in July and now it’s a total loss. Water was at the bottom of the windows right before dark and it was still rising. Frankly with the current that was flowing I am surprised it was still in place.

Now, this one is concerning. It follows a tweet about a FF warning that said failure wasn't thought to be a concern.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until 6 a.m. for the Nolichucky River below the Nolichucky Dam, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown. "A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for the Nolichucky River below Nolichucky Dam. Dam failure is not imminent. This is out of an abundance of caution because of the volume of water overtopping the dam. The situation is being monitored closely by TVA and local officials," the NWS said.

This is saying that dam failure is not imminent.
