There's always something, isn't it?!?! Cook at home, eat simple foods and read the labels.

A vitamin added to cereals, bread and pasta might be linked to heart disease, a study found.

Niacin, found in many breakfast cereals and other 'enriched' or 'fortified' products, is a common B vitamin previously recommended to lower cholesterol.

But researchers found a chemical called 4PY, created when the body breaks down excess niacin, is strongly associated with heart attacks, strokes and cardiac conditions.

I went to the doctor the other day and he told me he had some bad news for me. He told me I wasn't going to making it out of this world alive.

I was looking for Quaker granola bars the other day and couldn't figure out why there were none to be found. But then I figured it out. Yeap, always something!

"Might". That is a pretty big qualifier.

I suspect if you tried a little bit you could find a study that MIGHT link anything to any ailment. I'm not saying the researchers are right or wrong. I just prefer to have a little more certainty than "might" before getting overly concerned.

You're not wrong, but I think it's good to have a heads-up.

I'd be interesting to know the source of the funding and the cost.
Lots of conflicting info in the past with coffee, chocolate, carageenan, high fructose corn syrup, etc. cited as good or bad depending on the study.

The FDA has been attacking Niacin and other drugs such as N-acetyl cysteine for a while now.

Niacin used to be approved to treat high cholesterol by the FDA but they reversed that years ago.

Not sure why. Maybe a Dr here that isn't a condescending prick like crazy4lsu can weigh in as to why.

It's a way to move attention away from the covid problems... because who hasn't eaten any of this stuff.

Exactly.

If you pay me enough I could probably get you a study showing there MIGHT be a link between suicide slurpees and erectile disfunction.

Of course the term MIGHT can be viewed in context. The OP is concerned that MIGHT = Does. However, MIGHT could as easily = DOESN'T. The media outlets print these stories to draw attention. Mission accomplished!

You do you. But I don't see "might" as a big reason for concern.

Doesn't effect me. Been on a Carnivore diet since June 2023 and haven't eaten bread, cereal, pasta, sugar in over 7 months. Getting ready to order new jeans size 30 waist.

This is an interesting article, but it seems to have some flaws.

They say that the chemical causes reproductive issues and disrupts fetal growth in animal test subjects. Then, they note that they found detectable amounts of the chemical in 92% of the products they tested. They didn't say to what level the chemical was present, which is a red flag. They also note that the chemical leaves the human body within 24 hours. They need to explain if a "detectable level" is an amount large enough to cause in humans the same issues it causes in animal test subjects. Without that bit of info this comes off as fear mongering, at least to some degree.

Dropping a link here since most of the news sources don't contain a link to the study/article.

Article: A terminal metabolite of niacin promotes vascular inflammation and contributes to cardiovascular disease risk

I wonder if excess niacin and the metabolites from it could be one of the real culprits of inflammation from grain/breads and not gluten.

Seems like the OT would be in support of this research considering, if true, it justifies stopping the mandated practice of enriching grains with niacin.

Does it pose an acute risk for those things or is it cumulative?
