Hopefully the crews take better care of those than the BDouglas.

Stay away from the bourre games. Your wallet will be thicker because of it.

Make friends with the cook. He's the most important person on the rig and will hook you up if y'all are cool.

You’ve done work on Bob Douglas?

I think both are off Africa now.

Yup, I miss them now. Worked on the majority of the drillships in the GOM right now. Or the brother/sister ships.

Late to the party, but I was on land for 5 years then went deep water ~5 years ago. Here is what I remember, specific to going out there.

Don't wear travel clothes you like, they write your room number on your clothes for laundry (and if they can't find a tag it bleeds through)

Be careful with the desserts. The baker is usually the best cook on the rig, and she will make you fat.

Crane/lifts were a big deal on land, they literally don't stop working in deep water. Be aware of what is above you always.

Use the f#%^ing handrails. Nothing more irritating than the days reset cause someone is too hard to use a handrail and slips.

Know your lifeboat number and how to put on your lifejacket. It could save your life, but now importantly, the weekly drills take longer if people can't get their stuff on right.

Good hygiene. Take off your nasty stuff before going into the gallery, offices, and quarters. The rig/ships are big but crowded. Viruses/sicknesses run wild once they are out there.

Don't go exploring without someone who knows where they are going, especially before decks. They are big and disorienting below decks.

Be safe and learn as much as you can. Deep water is the "big leagues"; you'll see the best tools and most advanced procedures being used. It is also a floating city, and takes a lot to keep our running...soak it all in, you never know where you might find "your thing" or when that extra knowledge will help during a downturn.

Edit for one more: be nice to the galley and quarters crew, clean up after yourself. They aren't your servants.

I live in Sugar Land so I’ve rubbed elbows with a few Noble suits.

I’ll admit, I don’t know what they’re talking about, but I remeber drillship names Bully, Don Taylor, Tom madden, Sam Croft...

Don't spend all that offshore cash in one place. Oil prices might drop again, so be prepared.

I’ll be on my P’s & Q’s, I definitely don’t want to do anything stupid, especially on my first trip.

No idea what you’re talking about. Rigs in the US are owned by private companies and leased by Oil & Gas operators so I don’t know what a State or Federal rig is.

If I’m wrong, please, by all means enlighten me.

I’ve gotta ask... you took a 60% pay cut just to work offshore? Is there going to be a ROI in the future?

Always have your PPE’s on and follow all safety regulations. Safety guys are always looking to justify their jobs.
Make sure you bring earphones
Pay attention getting on and off the helo
Don’t be an arse to the catering crew.
Don’t gain 20 lbs
There are some interesting stories out there. Talk to everyone, but avoid the people that get on your nerves. There will be a lot of them.

Here's some advice for when you get back:

Best get out my way first day from off shore
Cause I'm gonna ride around I'm gone ride somemore
And I'll be bumping bocephus out the speakers of my 4X4
Call up my country queen my dixieland delight
With cut offs and horka boots and cheater pipe tight
Nicknamed the Florida mile cause she's out of sight
I get so high when she's by my side
Feel like I'm floating thru the air like cloud deglide
Got on my boots and spurs cause no on heard she gone let me grind
