The past couple of months, I've heard of people having to pay outrageous costs in order to get their stolen vehicle out of impound.

The latest story I heard was someone who got two cars stolen from his house on halloween night. He filed a police report with his pd, but a different pd actually found the car, and he wasn't notified until a couple of days later. When he called his pd to get the cars, they said that they couldn't release them until their investigation(?) was over. That took 4 days.

He ended up having to pay 1400 dollars to get both vehicles out of the tow lot. Is all of this legal? It seems criminal to me. I told him to contact an attorney to see if he can possibly get his money back or something.

Government agencies have an infinite number of ways to extort money from citizens. They will also red tape you do death in any matter possible.

That is a business, not a charity. Maybe one day UNICEF will get into the impound business, but until then, they're the people to see.

Okay, right, but victims shouldn't have to pay hundreds of dollars to get their stolen property back.

You guys got somethin' to say to me? Why don't you say it in the microphone. I got a backup mike right here. Check one two, testing, testing. Yup, they both workin' and guess what? They don't like no feedback, what's up?

OT says

This might have something to do with it. Your buddy doesn't pay taxes in that jurisdiction so no, it isn't a free service.

Depends on the department. LSP's tow truck companies don't make you pay but his insurance should be paying the fees anyway.

Most agencies use privately owned wrecker services and wrecker yards so the government agency is not making any money off of it. You are paying the private company for the towing and Storage of your vehicle
