File another report claiming the car has been stolen.

Tow truck owners are the greatest scum of the earth - even below divorce attorneys.

Wait, let's not be rash. Also, where do we slot car salescritters?

If you get ripped off by a car salesman that’s your fault - you have no choice but to pay the extortion demanded by the tow truck owner.

Most agencies use privately owned wrecker services and wrecker yards so the government agency is not making any money off of it. You are paying the private company for the towing and Storage of your vehicle
Likely true in this case, but the original point remains.

Bolt cutters and a shotgun are cheaper than $1,400. I know which one I’d choose.

I don't recall The Dude paying anything to get his car back in The Big Lebowski

Does insurance cover any of that?
if you have decent insurance it will pay for damages, storage, towing, etc. My friend's truck was stolen and the insurance company took car of it. It is dealing with the police and impound yard that is the head ache.

That would be at a minimum breaking and entering, and if you do have a firearm at the time it will likely be attempted armed robbery. There isn't a impound lot in the nation that doesn't have security cameras watching every inch. OJ Simpson did 9 years for trying to steal his own property back.

Towing companies and impound lots are ridiculous. They dont have to notify the owner for 15 days and can charge $75 a day plus towing.
