I went from being around the chaos of the BR metro area my entire life, to going up to Monroe for college.

I did the reverse. I was born and raised around Monroe, went to school at NLU/ULM/Whatever, but moved to BR for a job.

9.5 years til I retire and move back. I'm done with this traffic.

It’s horrible man. Half the reason why I liked living in NELA so much, was the traffic being calmer and people not being as crazy on the roads up there.

Best thing we ever did imo. Better quality of life all around. More space, less crime, slower paced, cheaper land, nicer people and better schools.
Closest town is 6x smaller than where I left and county wide has about 1/3 the people. More spread out though due to more usable land in the county than the parish I left that was mostly marsh so people were closer together.

There's a higher concentration of old people in small towns, and old people, of any race, can be some of the most racist people alive. I've heard my dead grandmother (middle of nowhere Indiana) say things off hand, and gone, wha? But I've also watched far more vicious tirades from old black men in Grambling. Old people are "set in their ways," lol.

But, I think the point he's getting at is that because there tends to be a higher level of personal engagement in smaller towns, people are going to remember what you said or did, so many people's tongues get held a bit. People in suburbs like Cypress probably haven't eaten knuckles since junior high. If I called someone a n* or a sp1c in Brookshire, for instance, I'm probably going to rightfully end up on the ground.

Yes and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

My wife and I grew up on dairy farms outside of a town of about 1000. We reconnected 20 years after we graduated and when we got married she was already living in a city of 250k and thought it was great. The moment she got pregnant the countdown began to move to a smaller town. By the time our kid started school we wanted to be the hell out of that city. We moved 30 minutes away, to a different county, and our 1200 sq ft house on 0.19 acres of land had property taxes that were double what we are paying on 2 acres of land and a 3000sq ft house with an attached two car heated garage and a 5 car unattached heated garage plus a 20 ft by 20 ft shed.

Now when we hear gunfire it lines up with a hunting season as opposed to wondering if it was a domestic situation, a drive by, or a drug deal gone wrong. My wife only knew neighbors on each side of us and across the street and despite owning her own brick and mortar business wasn’t connected at all. Since moving she has become the VP of the library board, helped organize a local business association, and has gotten a weekly farmers market off the ground along with a spring and fall wine walk. She has gotten more connected and feels more valued here than she ever did in the 20 years in her previous location.

The biggest adjustment was that trips to a Costco or big box home improvement store need to be planned out just a bit better but that’s small potatoes compared to the benefits. However, you go to a Home Depot or Menards and you interact with idiots who don’t know what you are looking for or need. We have a real good hardware store in town where everyone there knows exactly where things are located and understand what you are looking for.

Grew up in a rural town with a 4 digit population and have lived in Twin Cites/Milwaukee/Chicago metros.

Moved back to hometown and have never been happier.

I despise the city/suburbs.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted for this but it's spot on.

Lived in Houston for 10 years. Blacks and Whites just lived and worked together. Its more of a poor vs not poor situation instead of color. If anything the racistness was directed at Hispanics. Moved to St Francisville, LA 8 years ago and black/white just exist around each other. They don't associate unless it's a necessity. Like an imaginary line of separation. Just my observations...people from small towns really like to talk about how they aren't racist tho...which is strange.
