The only time I lose ALL desire to drink is the two days after a heavy drinking session.
I have limited my weekday drinking to almost zero lately, though. Even a couple drinks in the evening makes me a touch less sharp at work the next day. No hangover, just sluggish and a bit less motivated.

Good for you OP and anyone else also following up on this. I've tried doing the same but I just can't seem to give it up. A lot harder than I thought it would be.

I’m in my 70’s and drank regularly and on some occasions heavily for over 50 years. Quit any real drinking about 2-3 years ago. Now I still have one occasionally with clients or at a business dinner but that’s it. My interest just died out.
I should add that I was motivated a good bit by seeing what alcohol has done to my friends and contemporaries. The ones who don’t drink are mentally sharper, healthier, and generally better off. The guys that have kept drinking, well, in many cases it’s sad. That stuff has an effect that builds with time and then...

Truth. I'm in my 40s, and this is true even in my age group. I enjoy drinking, but let's not kid ourselves, it's detrimental in most respects.

if i hadn't given up drinking years ago i would be a total mess. i'll drink at big events or a beer here or there, but normal, consistent drinking? no
i haven't taken as many other health-related things as seriously consistently, so i can only imagine my health problems had i kept up drinking. giving up drinking originally was part of giving up smoking, so not doing that duo alone has probably given me a much better quality of life 10-20 years down the road

Good for you. It's still a struggle, and I do it more than I should on occasion, but I'm much better than I used to be.
I stopped the smoking too. Another horrible habit that I enjoyed far too much.

I had a drinking problem earlier in my life and quit cold turkey. I drink some now, but routinely will go months without a drink and not think twice about it.

I haven't had a drink since Friday night, but before that I can't remember the last time I didn't drink. It was eye opening. I'm going to limit myself to socials and weekends, but I expect that once I start feeling better each day I won't drink enough to feel like shut the next day.

That's been me for years, always wanted to quit and never could. This just happened out of the blue and is confusing as all hell. I'd usually start out the morning swearing i wasn't going to drink and then end up drunk by 7 pm and hating myself for it.

Yep, was a 2-3 night a week drinker for the last several years. I'd get hammered once or twice a year, usually at the camp.
I had shoulder surgery in Sept and didn't drink for 3-4 weeks after since I spent 95% of that time in bed. I have had 3 occasions since where I have made or ordered a drink. 2 of those 3 I poured it out after a few sips and made a water and enjoyed that 100 x's more.
It kinda makes me sad because I really used to love bourbon.

I just currently started an alcohol hiatus for the rest of January. I really can't remember before yesterday a day that I didn't have a drink of some sort. I'm thinking it may go back to pre-covid.
Time to hit the reset button and detox in order to retox.

Same here. Quit in my 30's because it began to hurt more than it was fun anymore.

Whenever I drink I always sleep really shitty so I've cut down some so that I can enjoy my sleep. Getting a good night of rest is a lot better than catching a buzz.

Yea, usually around 3am on Saturday night.

Never thought I would but over the last few months, yes. Was just thinking about this yesterday, about how many days I have gone without drinking. I don't really miss it. I'm not saying I'll never drink again but I think after this stint, I could go months without a drink and I wouldn't feel like I am missing anything.

Yeah, it happens at least once a year for me. I’ll go a couple months without anything, and no cravings at all. I always feel great during this period. My energy is usually through the roof during this time.

Yes. When the doctor said "you have end stage liver disease and it's very serious."
