When I watch mine as a kid, I look and act like a child with Aspergers in everything from the speech patterns, the screeches, the body language, hand movements, etc. It looks completely textbook, like what that kid would act like in a cheap psa or instructional video of how to spot it. I can’t watch it and see how anyone could interpret it otherwise. When I asked my parents why they never had me checked out, they said “We thought you were funny. You were entertaining.” I feel like a psychologist would have an absolute field day watching my siblings and I.

Ain’t no way I’m reading all this crap.
And there are no Christmas videos of my family. We were too poor for a video camera.

What did the couch get for Christmas?

A new basketball goal, a Schwinn bike, Sega CD with Echo, Mortal Kombat, and Jurassic Park and a Game Gear, a Talkboy, a copy of Beauty and the Beast, a radio control car, a Game Genie for the Super NES. The family probably threw away a grand on me.

As I watched I realized that I had stayed behind in the family room. I began to film the room by myself. Sensing that there was more to Christmas than what I had just witnessed, I began creating a community for myself. The dog began to talk to me on camera. Then I began to give life to inanimate objects like a couch and the ceiling fan. I named them and spoke with them, obviously desperate for communion and interaction with others. It was one of the most pathetic (in the true meaning of that word) scenes I've ever seen on film. Perhaps internet forums have served a similar function for me, but forums give animated response to my inanimate words.
you're a wacko

I identify with your story (well, except for the imaginary couch friend part, seek help if you still do that btw) and in fact the excessiveness of my childhood Christmases have influenced me to not do the same for my own kids and rather focus on spending time together as well as gifts that can be played together. It requires a lot more effort and I have to put down my phone on Christmas morning but I'm told it will be worth it when I'm older.

My family, without fail, videoed every Christmas morning during my youth.
That is one of the most important things to do when your kids are little.
You'll never regret it. I was able to put together a video montage of all of my daughters bday videos from birth to 9th for her 10 year bday.

This is a very interesting post, thank you.

We had all of the interaction and community and none of the excess. We would have gotten bikes one year, a basketball goal one year, a game system one year. My parents had money but were super frugal and refused to spoil us. As an adult I am very much not materialistic. I live in a small house and drive an old car and am super happy. But I am also all about community- dinner parties, brunch, birthday celebrations, going to ball games and parades....all of that all the time. I have raised my children the same way and even managed to convert my husband and stepson. Stepson's mom buys ALL the cool things and he still chooses to spend EVERY Christmas with us.

Yeah well good for you OP.
You know what I got for Christmas that year?
It was a banner fricking year at the old Lewis family. I got a carton of cigarettes. The old man grabbed me and said "Hey! smoke up, Huey!"

I did not enjoy the Breakfast Club.
I did not get the couch a Christmas gift. I think some have misinterpreted "my friend." From what I could tell, I was desperate to talk to someone on Christmas morning. I think this was quite a natural and healthy desire. Rather than repress that desire, I constructed a world that allowed me to express something healthy. In the video, I seemed to be as well adjusted as one could expect at that age.
