About 6 years ago on 6th street in Austin a young woman asked me for money. I offered to buy her food and she accepted. She looked very dirty and had bad clothes on. She probably would have looked decent cleaned up. We walked into this bar and I ordered us both a hamburger and a drink. I went to go wash my hands in the bathroom and when I came back I see her walking across the bar and she takes a box of cigarettes off of this dinner table, that was empty at the time. She comes back to our spot at the bar and she knows I saw her. I'm just staring at her and then she spurts out "I don't steal." I said maybe you should go put those back then. She got up and return the cigarettes. She then goes on to tell me her life story of traveling and how she did not need money at all. Sounded like a bunch of BS. I asked why is she panhandling if she does not need money? She explains she needs just a small amount to be happy. I said there are a ton of low paying jobs out there. She was quite for the rest of the meal. She said thanks and walked outside and continued panhandling.

Every now and then I'll buy breakfast for someone if I'm walking in to work and they ask for money for food. This one guy I had seen in the Chick Fil A several times, and he asked if I could help him out. I asked him what he wanted, and he said a chicken biscuit and a water. So I go in, place my order for a Bacon Egg and Cheese combo, and get his chicken biscuit and water in a separate bag. I was feeling good about helping someone out who wasn't just begging for cash. Then I get to my desk and open up my bag and find the CFA worker put the wrong biscuit in the bag. I had a chicken biscuit and my delicious Bacon egg and Cheese was going to this other guy.

The best one ever in the downtown train area in Shreveport was the hooker who pulls up in a Mercedes and then wants to bum $10.

We laughed and ran her off.

The hookers in that area are definitely IWDNUACHI

Many times, but this one was my favorite.

I was driving through Houston and stopped to get gas and go pee. The men's room was inside an outbuilding, and the attendant gave me a key and told me to be sure and lock it when I was done.

After doing my business I walked outside and there was a homeless guy right outside, reeking of sweat and alcohol. He wanted to go inside, so I held the door open for him and tried to give him the key, telling him to lock the door when he was done.

His response was "Don't have time for that, I gotta take a dump", and walked right on in.

So I waited until he went inside the men's room, locked the door, gave the key to the attendant without a word and left.

I still get a chuckle visualizing the homeless guy realizing he's locked in and the attendant wondering wtf was going on and how did he get in there and lock himself in?

Jeez. What if no one went to check the bathroom for a day or more? I don't really feel bad for him but still.

I usually just ignore them no response nothing. Lady hit me up on north side of I-10 near Laplace exit, at the store. I declined her asking for money. She had a kid in the car - geez

I'll share three experiences I had in Australia. Remember too that Aussies are not afraid to tell you what they are thinking, so that will explain the vulgarity.

I had a lady knock on our front door once. I opened the wood door and not the screen door, and asked what she wanted. She asks for a couple of bucks for bus fare and some sob story. While she is talking, she reaches for the handle of the screen door to open it. I grab the handle on my side to stop her and said something along the lines of "Stop right there. Where I come from, I would have shot you dead by now for trespassing." She backed off, said "frick you, mate" and walked off. I watched through the window for a few minutes as she went door to door.

I was once taking some cash out of an ATM at a shopping center when another lady approached me, asking for some money, while I was conducting my business at the ATM. I just looked her square in the eye and told her to frick off. I really was pissed and in defense mode considering she was all up in my space at the ATM. She must have heard the serious tone in my voice, but not before saying, well, "frick you, mate!"

The funniest was a guy who stopped me, my wife, and brother-in-law in Sydney. He asks for a couple of bucks for train ticket. He says he is trying to get home because he had to go out an get tampons for his sister who was on her period. He had a pack of them in his hand. He looked like a druggie. I just laughed while my brother-in-law just said...wait for it..."frick off, mate!"

They like to say "frick off, mate!" a lot down there.

As they're approaching, my brother asks them for a dollar. It's always awesome to see their face contort and then stammer something out.

The outbuilding I left him in had a big floor to ceiling thick glass window across the front, anyone at the station would have seen him once he left the restroom. I doubt he was stuck more than ten minutes.

Best stories I've heard is some will dig thru the garbage outside of a Walmart or the likes and find reciepts then go into the store, grab the item off the shelf, and try to 'bring it back' for a refund. That's the more hardcore druggies. My nephew works at Target and sees it all the time.

I did nearly the same thing on the levee on Friday... some girl came up with a clipboard and was asking for "donations"... I waved my hand and mouthed "No cash" and she walked to the next group of people and I said, "Actually, I do have $5 if that would help?" and she turned around and I just laughed and said, "frick off"

I dont think he was a pan handler but the usual riff raff at gas stations.

Years ago a guy walks up to me while Im pumping gas saying he needed spare change for food. I had $1 and change so i gave it to him.

He walked in and bought a beer. When I was finished pumping gas I walked up to him after he opened the bottle and took his taste, and I hit the bottle out of hands to smash on the concrete.

Guy was pissed bbut I told him if he didnt lie to me, I would have bougght him a beer if he asked. Donat ask for food and get beer.

This happened when I didnt give a shite about anything. I wouldnt do that today.

I was mowing my lawn when I lived in Memphis. Guy pats me on the shoulder as I'm pushing the mower and nearly scared me half to death. Says he has his pregnant wife in a car broken down a quarter mile away and needs a certain size socket wrench and $14.76 for a new belt. Seemed legit at the time (I was in my early 20s) so I got the wrench for him and gave him $20. Told him I was leaving as soon as I was done cutting grass so could he leave the wrench on my front porch when he was done with it.

Never saw that wrench again.

Another time I physically took a guy who was broken down at a gas station in Tyler, TX to get a new battery, paid for it and helped him install it. He said he was on his way to start a new job in Dallas and barely had enough money to get there. I filled his car with gas and sent him on his way.

Always wonder if he made anything of himself.

On an opposite story, I was coming home late one night and a rough looking guy was stranded on the side of the road with some jumper cables in his hand right by Minute Maid park. He was visibly pissed at this point. The Astros had a game that night and nobody stopped to give the guy a jump. I pulled off and said, "you need some help?" He was so pleased and honestly just needed a jump and went about his way. Had been out there for 4 hours trying to get someone to help him.
