Have a dog with epilepsy, looking for info

Wife and I have a small breed terrier mix that has epilepsy. For the past year his seizures have been under control due to a combination of phenobarbital and zonasmide. Well, his liver is taking a hit, so the vet had us take him off the drugs so his levels can normalize.

Feels like a lose-lose situation because he’s barely three and probably the best dog I’ve ever owned.

Anyone else deal with seizures in their dog? Was their anything that worked particularly well? How old/big/breed? Anything that didn’t work?

Any info is appreciated. I know it’s a message board, but it sometimes helps to hear other people’s stories.

Have you considered CBD Oil?

Mother-in-law had mentioned it, so it’s something we’re considering for sure. Haven’t heard of anyone personally that’s used it though.

We had a dachshund that was epileptic. We kept flashlights and tennis balls away from her because they were like cocaine for her.

When she had a seizure we just comforted her through it and she was fine after.

The AKC Canine Health Foundation is in the midst of a study: LINK

I have yet to see results of it yet, and don't know the estimated completion date.

It’ll be interesting to see the results of that, and it might be the way to go. The meds he was on were working, but I just think he’s too small at 15 lbs to process it.

He basically puked three times, passed out, and shite himself because his liver was doing poorly.

CBD at least can’t hurt to try.

Hopefully this isn't the dog posting on the owners account.

Prop your feet up on him after a long day at work for a nice relaxing massage.

While not particularly helpful, it was hilarious.

Put dog on Wellness food for small breads. My small bred had same issues it was her diet. Ever since we started with wellness she only has issues very rarely

Ok so I had a lab years ago that had seizures one night. Then it began happening more often. I was a kid. My parents changed the dogs diet and the dog never had another one the rest of its life. Make sure to keep it from hurting itself after having one and also be careful after they have them. They do not know where they are and can be aggressive to anything even if they are the most docile dog ever normally.

American cocker spaniel. She lasted nearly fifteen years, however.
