Learning striking teaches you better footwork and how to maximize punching power. It teaches how to end a fight quickly on your feet before it goes to the ground.
And once on the ground dirty tactics can make it extremely difficult to control.
I'd rather learn to keep the fight standing.

I guess I just did a horrible job of explaining my opinion.
Everybody always says you should learn jiujitsu because it is popular in MMA.
But for self defense jiujitsu is very limited and forces you to take the risk of it going to the ground. Also it is very limited when you are attacked my 2 individuals.
For that reason, I feel you should have a striking background first and then learn grappling to supplement that.

That is what I did. I became an expert at quick strikes. Quick, hard, compact. If I did not end him in my first strike flurry, I knew it was going to the ground. So I became an expert grappler. To this day, I am undefeated.

I think there are more UFC fighters that are strikers now. Aren't there?

No, they're everything .... that's why its called mixed martial arts.
They've taken a piece of each martial art.
But no doubt that at the beginning BJJ was king of all the others.

I know that. But doesn't most specialize in one form.
It just seems to me that UFC has shifted to more Strikers than Ground fighters.
Oh and in the beginning it was ran by the Gracies as an infomercial for Gracie BJJ. My recollection it was Gracie and Shamrock and then a bunch of amateur fighters, not that great of a collection of talent.
It has come a long way quickly.

And it proved that Gracie BJJ was indeed the best.

Yes karate is nerdy. If you say you're training for mma then everyone thinks pure cool.

Well we aren't trying to be UFC.
I like that he has some self defense skills.
He just enjoys competing in point sparring. Honestly he enjoys any kind of competition.
Also by starting at 4 years old I think it really taught him about competing and work ethic. Which has helped him in other sports (basketball and baseball)

Boxing.
Find a boxing gym, and sign your kid up.
Seriously. My third of 5 used to get picked on constantly.
After only two weeks of training, he became the most feared kid at his school.
Now they refer to him as "sir". I couldn't be prouder.

Karate was never cool.
Kung Fu on the other hand, everybody was doing that.

No we are happy with karate. We are going on 7 years of training.

We don't have that problem.
At this point, we are just enjoying traveling and competing. He is actually one of the top kids in the nation.
Its more of a sport along with baseball and basketball that he enjoys.
The self defense is just a bonus.

Just like boxing, Muay Thai, jiu-jitsu, wrestling and every other martial art people trane in besides UFC. I trane UFC at my local UFC gym and it is a way better martial art than any of those stupid martial arts since none of them are effective in the real world.
Boxing isn't effective in the real world?

Did you just admit your kid is a socially awkward nerd
Not anymore - but he sure as hell was when I first put him in martial arts.
What, you thought I put him in martial arts because I wanted to train him for a promising future as a Power Ranger?

It's not a brag, it's a simple statement of fact in response to a thread I didn't start. The fact that you think it's a "brag" simply indicates that you're jealous of it. And at age 16 he's accomplished a hell of a lot more than you have.

Completely false. Gracie jits under any of Grand Master Helio's sons is meant to be taught as a self defense martial art. We incorporate lots of stand-up but the focus is primarily ground stuff. For that reason, boxing is the gold standard for self defense stand-up. Very few guys know how to punch or defend a punch and a good boxer can usually eliminate the threat pretty easily.

Karate cool or not is nice to be able to do. I have been known arse a bad arse on here just because I don't give a frick and will torture you to the point you wish you were dead. But I know some moves that most would not expect from me. That's my edge. I am not that big of a guy but I assure you win or lose a fight that person never wants a part of me again. Karate is cool.

You do have a point. In all honesty, no matter what your martial art style is, the dedication and proficiency of your training and moves is what will make you a skilled fighter. Also, an effective fighter is able to to adapt to their opponent.
I am also a martial artist so I understand the many misconceptions that people have. But the truth is a fighting style is what you make it just like an education or a job.
MMA is very effective, but the ground fighting aspect is something that should only be resorted to as a last resort. It is too easy to get dogpiled or battered my multiple opponents.
I have meet some traditional martial artists who could very easily take down an average man and it is mainly due to using the right technique based on the situation.
Strength and skill can make or break a fight if you are not aware of your opponent and your vantage.
TLDR All styles are pointless unless you consistently discipline yourself to use them effectively.
