I thought it was cool in the 80's, but I was a kid who thought time travel was palusible. I also thought a few karate lessons would make me into a fricking ice cold assassin until I saw my "black belt" friend get his arse stomped into a mud puddle at recess one day.
As a parent, I have noticed that Boy Scouts has become the bastion of nerdhood in my area. It's a shame, because I'm a big believer in the spirit of Scouts.

It appears that martial arts schools made a shift away from appealing to people who want to learn self defense. They figured out they could make more money in the pay per belt model appealing to young kids. Almost like a fricking karate daycare. Definitely isn't as cool as it was.(and it wasn't that cool to begin with)

Very few kids are in martial arts to learn to fight. There are more kids put in martial arts for discipline, self confidence, and competition. Extreme martial arts (sort of a fusion of martial arts and gymnastics with choreographed routines) and weapons forms are more popular with kids than fighting.
In Sport Karate that is true. It's more about flash.
My son trains and competes at a Traditional style Dojo that emphasizes sparring.
It's just another sport to compete in. We know people all across the nation from tournaments and most are normal everyday people that just enjoys competition.

I was a scout, scouting is kinsa nerdy. But can be offset with athletics
Scouts go on to sucessful lives and careers
Karate kids not so much, shite Ralph Macchio was on a path to be Tom Cruise and karate derailed his entire career

This is true.
But there are still some good traditional dojos that emphasize self defense and fighting.
Sport karate and franchise karate has diluted it but there are still some really good schools in Louisiana.

Dude, your poor kid. How much do you have to suck in order for your dad to have to try and brag about you to a bunch of strangers online about a bunch of crap that isn't even worthy of bragging about?

Who cares?
Screw what everybody thinks!
Screw what is popular!
If you're interested in it, then that's all the reason anyone needs!!!

So nerdy is looking down upon our great society? Going to the library is nerdy. But that nerdy kid might become a Doctor or Engineer one day banking it, contributing to society.
What is cool these days? Drinking beer, watching sports, taking selfies? Oh yeah, we need more of these people.

Most people when they think karate visualize sport karate which is all flash and show.
But there is still good traditional style organizations that provide good athletic competition along with strong self defense techniques.

Karate and taekwondo have become lame if you're going to learn a martial art learn Jiu Jitzu
Posted on 4/3/16 at 12:35 pm to VerlanderBEAST
Jiujitsu is overrated.
It is predicated on the idea that your opponent follows certain rules (no eye poking, biting, strikes to back of the head etc....)
Jiu-jitsu is not a great self defense system.
Its great for sport but in my opinion if you are going to learn to defend yourself you need to learn a striking form.

If you're taking self defense classes they teach you all those things. You can also learn it for sport which I'm pretty sure is what most adults do

wut
how is a striking form going to help you with eye poking or biting more than BJJ?
ground control is the most important aspect of "street fighting" and you get that with BJJ and wrestling
