My son started in karate when he was 4 and I think it really helped him develop good footwork and quickness that helped him later on in basketball.

Say what you will but my son loves to compete. He plays every sport and just loves competition.
He loves fighting and we enjoy traveling to the different tournaments around the nation. He has competed in Vegas and looking forward to going out to Phoenix this summer.

Dude, 911moto's son makes over $300K per year at 16 years old because he is already a world class karate champ. He also trains with world famous athletes and bangs hot milf neighbors all because of his sick arse karate skills. You better fricking recognize, son!
Ironically, as I'm reading this we're at Nationals where he just took gold medals in both of his divisions and regained the world #1 ranking in both.

Most of the kids taking karate have social problems and their parents put them in karate to prevent them from being bullied. Karate does not turn kids into nerds karate appeals to the parents of nerds.
This is actually very accurate.

Karate is a lame style of fighting. Just like boxing, Muay Thai, jiu-jitsu, wrestling and every other martial art people trane in besides UFC. I trane UFC at my local UFC gym and it is a way better martial art than any of those stupid martial arts since none of them are effective in the real world.

Krav Maga (did I spell that right?) seems to be the skill to have on the street.

This why I plan to send my son to MMA training instead of pussy Karate. By 7 years old, he should have a solid foundation of street fighting skills. He won't even need to being his own lunch money to school.
To the original topic, I've not ever met a cool Karate person. Not to say everyone's a douche, but never met a guy where you thought, "man that guy looks awesome". Only kid at my high school who did it was literally a bipolar psychopath who was the biggest nerd in the world. Think Napoleon Dynamite with legit anger issues.

When MMA gained steam, formal artsy-type shite went the way D&D

Sports martial arts is really more popular than traditional karate with kids today. And we're not trashy so I don't have to worry anout my kid getting in street fights. If you're worried about street fights (does your trailer park have streets?), UFC is definitely the one for you.

Martial arts is where fighting systems go to die. As we evolve our ways to hurt others is me of these fighting systems just become not practical. I'm. Not saying they do not have anything to offer. It pays to do your research. I'd say Krav and Sambo are some of the most effective for self defense.

Very few kids are in martial arts to learn to fight. There are more kids put in martial arts for discipline, self confidence, and competition. Extreme martial arts (sort of a fusion of martial arts and gymnastics with choreographed routines) and weapons forms are more popular with kids than fighting. It's more about being just another sport for individual competition than it is anout self defense.
