People say this but my generation of doctors avoid medication. Some have like legit fright of it. Therapy is way more prevalent. I can only speak for psychiatry but the stereotypes that we are pill pushers is the furthest thing I’ve even seen from truth. The old guard was but we are trained way different now. Many of my colleagues refuse to even consider controlled medicine. I think that’s insane and an open to prescription medicine that I deem is needed because I am the expert and that is my job. But minimal medication while focusing on habit building is my main goal. My practice even has 2 in house therapist

I'm currently on roughly 1.5 mg of klonopin a day. I say roughly because some days I'll only take 1 mg and other days 2 or 3 mg. I've heard it's a long process where you have to cut down by like .10 every month or something. Keep in mind that I'm trying to ween off slowly so I can limit the withdrawals.
If I’ve learned anything about pillheads, it’s that y’all always lie, leave out very pertinent details, and/or sugarcoat the shite out of stories to portray a different reality that you’re living in
Why don’t you give us the whole story?

He actually had the courage to email me for advice. His op is obvious early warning signs of benzo abuse but he saw he needed help and got confidence to bring to his doctor

I’m changing up some of the details but basically I worked a very young boy who’s head was run over by a truck. Not my first child fatality but that one got me.

How high did you dose up to? And what length of time as your detox spread out for?
I can’t remember the dosage but I went cold turkey and it was about two weeks of hell if I remember right. That was years ago though

Just a public service e for anyone ever withdrawing from benzos get baclofen from your primary care. It belongs to muscle relaxer class of medications but has slight overlap with GABA with benzos do their work and it eases the mental anguish and rebound anxiety plus the spasms immediately

When I did inpatient residency I would get a little sad when they complained how 6 mg of Ativan just wasn’t enough so I learned about that specific muscle relaxer then and it’s ability to ease benzo pain

OP I took 3-4 mg Xanax a day for 20 years for anxiety. Went camping and lost them. Went through withdrawals and on day 3 had a seizure which ultimately broke my back in the thoracic area. I had a psychiatrist ween me off slowly and it took me 6 months to ease off of them. I stayed off of them for 2 years and finally threw in the towel and got back on them.

Damn sorry to hear that, I can only imagine something like that. I have had some rough times and one that got me to go to a Dr for my stress and anxiety and depression. They prescribed me some meds and reading a few threads on here made go research the side effects. Yeah that was enough by it self to give me the strength to make through it. Hope it works out for you buddy

That is exactly why no self respecting psychiatrist will give Xanax to anyone. Especially as people age.

Oh I appreciate that but I’m good now. It’s been several years since I’ve been on anything. I was only on a benzo for about a year, at the most. Maybe more like 9-10 months

I will maintain people on benzos long term if they’re stable all UDS is good pill counts fine no crazy things. But only Klonopin on never more than 3mg a day split in 3 doses

I have a bottle of Xanax in my medicine cabinet. It's been there for 3 years now. I was prescribed them after my mom had a stroke and I took over her financial and medical decisions. The stress of it kept me up at night, and on top of dealing with my own job, family, finances, etc., the anxiety was indescribable. I told my primary I could mostly manage the anxiety during the day, but as soon as I got in bed, my thoughts raced, I questioned every decision I made in regards to my mom, and I'd be up all night with anxiety. He first tried Zoloft. After a month I still felt like an emotionless zombie. He gave me a small prescription of Xanax(5 pills, I think .5mg), and I took one the night I picked up the prescription. It was the first night in 2 months I got a good night's sleep. So he gave me a bigger prescription(30 pills), but gave me a stern lecture of not letting them become a crutch. I took maybe one a week just to get some decent sleep. Eventually I just stopped taking them. I don't even remember why, but I started having better luck sleeping with marijuana and melatonin.
I should probably toss that bottle out as I haven't taken one in over a year.

I was on prescribed Klonopin for six years (1mg a day) and successfully got off of it. I took about six months to do it.

My advice as a psychiatrist that specializes in anxiety disorders/depression/PTSD/and borderline + bi polar isntoss the Xanax right now. Go to your doctor and ask for 30 .5mg Klonopin instead
Or if you have good relationship you can try and ask for halcion

1mg is absolutely nothing. No offense. I would taper that off inpatient while I was a resident probably with just fluids. I deal with people who take 15mg a day 20mg 24 is the most i have seen
Posted on 7/9/20 at 11:44 am to td01241
Why would I take offense. 15mg a day??? Goodness
