There is not one single legitimate medical reason to EVER give someone Xanax.

I took Xanax for a few months as needed. Never had a panic attack before in my life but randomly started getting them 1-2 times a week. It was nothing I had ever experienced before, for 15-20 mins I’d end up curled up on the floor, bawling my eyes out thinking I was having a heart attack and dying. Xanax helped tremendously, no way I’d need something or want to take something that lasted all day.

Are they prescribed? If so you need to be talking to your doctor about this not the O-T. If not don't completely stop but reduce your consumption of them drastically. Switch to just 0.5 a day for example and see how your body does.

Some people can drop them without much trouble. Others have severe withdraws. Don't be ashamed to get professional help on this my man. You will be better for it.

Benzo withdrawal can kill you and you run the risk of having seizures. Don’t attempt this without medical supervision.

Of course. Every single person will have that exact story. Benzos are a strange class of medications. One of the only ones that will 100% with no exceptions always cause rapid increase in tolerance in any section of the population. There is no one that can avoid it. So the question becomes how long can to justify its medical effectiveness vs how quickly you will require continuous larger doses and fast. Xanax is blackballed now because it has such a short active duration. It’s just safer and has a lower addiction risk to use Valium or Klonopin. Plus other benzos can be used outside of anxiety. Xanax is the only major one still being used that has one indication and that’s anxiety.

INpatient is different but I typical taper over a 12 month time period. The dose can cause slight alterations

yes. cold turkey about 10 years ago.

You're lucky you didn't kill yourself or do anything else to ruin your life. Quiting benzos cold turkey is extremely dangerous/dumb.

I weened off them about 8-10 years ago over a month or so. It was hell.

Yes it can be deadly but tbh that is slightly overblown sometimes. There are a ton of variations about if you are truly at risk of life threatening seizures. I have been focusing on benzos and very few other medications heavily for about 4 years now and a bunch of factors play into it. Still though you should always taper if you’re an outpatient

I was having major depression along with panic attacks that came out of nowhere. Never had one before. Psychiatrist at the time put me on Zoloft and 0.5 of Ativan to use PRN.

You had a great doctor. Benzo bridges with SSRIs are very common. Hopefully he explains the Ativan would be a stop gap no longer than 3 months max. Also again, why Ativan? It was not made to me used as much as it is

I hear that benzos are extremely hard to ween off of. Jordan Peterson had a very rough time. It sounded like hell.

Good luck to you.

Yea, should have never taken it as long as I did. I moved a lot for work which meant new doctors which means they kind of went with the flow of what I was taking since it wasn’t a problem with self escalation until the very end. As far as why Ativan.....not sure. I didn’t have much knowledge of benzos at the time. What is the reason they are normally prescribed?

Interdasting.

It was not fun tapering off. I was also abusing them though.

I also tapered off Lexapro a couple years after and holy shite the brain zaps were weird af.

There are ways to make it so much more tolerable. Outpatient you can do a long term taper like mine are mostly 12 months long. I give things like baclofen or something that also acts slightly on GABA. INpatient can be tough if you get hard arse doctors and terrible nurses

frick, my doc just said half the dose for a week, repeat for the 2nd week, then go every other day, then done. It was like 3-4 weeks actually.

Probably would've been way less sucky your way.

Ativan is now a days extremely popular only really in the US. We have the big 4 (quickly big 3 as Xanax is bleeding out rapidly) Ativan, Klonopin, Valium, and Librium for inpatients. All benzos are sent through the liver and the enzymes each compound requires dictate how and when the dissipate. Ativan we made specifically for people who didn’t have liver capabilities to process benzos so it operates differently thought muscle tissue and blood enzymes

Generic Xanax, 1 mg blue footballs. I would usually take/sublingual/waste through my nose 3-5 a day.

And 20 mg Lexapro as well.
