Yes. Neighbor bought an antique ford truck. He had me crank that old thing up for him. After we got it started, he let me drive it around the neighborhood. He and I tried several different spark settings and throttle adjustments to get the truck running smoother as he wanted.

We had a hand crank tractor growing up. It would take your arm off if not careful

No. But I’ve started a plane by pulling the prop.

Not a car, but I have had to hand crank an old tractor multiple times.

My grandfather had an old Allis Chambers from I guess late 40’s or maybe early 50’s that was a cartridge start. Used a 12 gauge shotgun shell with no pellets or projectiles to create an explosion and ignite the gas. I watched him do that a thousand times and it never once ceased to amaze me.

And he and the old farmers around him called it backfiring. Cool to see.

It’s how you see Jimmy Stewart start the plane Phoenix. Coffman starter and cartridges.

What about hand cranking a plane to start it?

If you owned an early Indian (with the fat tractor seat) they called the kick starter the "leg breaker" and you had to have enough body weight to use it.
