That's an understatement. Plus they take a lot longer to fix.

Huh? You don't think independent shops can get OEM parts?

I assure the knowledge that a dealer tech has about your vehicle and an independent is vastly different.

That's a bold statement. Your specific dealership may be good, but more times than not, I've found that the dealership is just as bad as other mechanics. I had one dealership tell me I needed some "tune-up" and part replaced. When I questioned the service guy about it, he said it would make my car run more efficiently and help with acceleration. I said, "why would I NEED that? I don't want you to do that" and he told me "Yeah, I wouldn't get that done either." I was floored! He basically just admitted that he tried to scam me. What an a-hole. That's the last time I used a dealership.

That's not been my experience at all....but I travel and move around a lot. It's nice to have my service history documented and the work warrantied by a huge network of service departments nationwide with loaner vehicles instead of a Podunk independent repair shop with banker's hours.

There are some things I prefer to have done by an independent mechanic. Since I stopped driving Fords, I have not had a reason to keep track of the competent, trusted mechanics locally.

That's an ignorant and bullshite statement. Dealership costs a little more but it's worth every penny.

talk about a bullshite statement, you just made one, dealerships are certainly capable of doing shoddier work than an independent body shop/mechanic just because they COULD do a better job doesn't mean they actually do.

Question should be if you have not ever been scammed.

Yep. Small town repair shop with much postive feedback:

I said several times over a few days "let me know how much it is before you fix it." They kept replying no problem we will.

Got a call one day. "It's fixed. $1,000."

Many times but not since I started leasing cars and turning them in after the warranty runs out.

no, but they tried to scam a woman I know. Dealer in Met told her she needed a new control arm for $700 to eliminate the suspension noise she heard. all it needed was a new sway bar end link, as the old one was corroded in half. fixed it DIY for $7.

Autozone is selling a cheap reproduction of the radiator while the dealership is selling O.E.M. parts.

OEM parts are more expensive. In some cases , not all , they're worth the higher price. OEM parts are designed to go with your vehicle. More than parts , is the service bulletins , factory backing , etc to help get the repair done right the first time. All shops (dealers and independent) will try and sell services. Most are worthless and not needed but the Advisor and/or tech is paid to attempt to sell these services.

When a tech leaves a dealer to open his own shop he also leaves behind the support from the factory to get all the info on common problems , fixes , and diagnostics. Dealers are a good thing when it comes to repairing your vehicle. Now brake pads , batteries , and other "wear" items can be done anywhere for cheaper. Even still , those brake pads and rotors from the parts house are not comparable to OEM. That's a fact.

I had my vehicle at a dealership getting a recall inspection performed. Asked them how much it would be to replace the light that was burnt out on my dashboard radio. $185

Pulled it up on YouTube that it was one screw and a 3 minute fix. Paid them the $1.95 for the bulb and did it right there on site.

Got somewhat fricked by an independent shop.

Had a bunch of issues getting the engine to turn over.

Diagnostic took FOREVER. Dropped the car off there on a monday and it wasn't until the next tuesday before they could tell me what needed to be done and for how much.

Turns out the battery was shot (Which was probably from me trying to start it so much when it wouldn't turn over), fuel filter and pump needed to be replaced and there was a sensor that went bad. The fuel filter was very clogged, which burned out the pump and that was the direct cause of why the engine wasn't getting the fuel needed to start.

The sensor in question reads the percentage of ethanol in the fuel and maps the engine accordingly. Basically a key part in FlexFuel vehicles.

Guy said that a new sensor was 500+ for OEM, but he assured me on several occasions that while there may be an error reading, there would be no ill effects as long as a didn't put in any gas with a high ethanol content (15%+). I thought that was kinda bogus, but I never do put anything above 10% in my tank and I was a broke college student so I said ok. Again, the guy repeatedly said the only thing that replacing the sensor would do for me is make the check engine light go away. The functionality of the car wouldn't be affected by a new sensor since I don't put anything more than e10 in my car anyway.

In fact, when he gave me the initial list of repairs that should be done he even prefaced the sensor repair with something along the lines of "Look this is something that you may want to fix, but it's not a necessary repair and we aren't a shop that fricks their customers by telling them something is necessary when it isn't."

So they replaced the fuel filter that was clogged and the fuel pump and my car was starting fine.

About a month later the car completely shuts down. No fuel is being delivered to the engine. I'm now home for the summer and I bring it to a local guy that is trusted. Said the bad sensor that I didn't replace was causing the computer to tell the engine that I was using 70+ percent ethanol gasoline even though I had 0% ethanol in the tank. The new fuel filter that the other guy installed was already completely blocked up and as a result the new fuel pump burned up and that's why my car wouldn't start. 700 bucks later it was fixed and I haven't had a problem since.

TLDR: Independent shop manager said that a repair could be done, but that it was very costly and wouldn't make a difference in the functionality of the car. Turns out it was very necessary.

ETA: fuel pump and filter, not just filter.

I was told I would need to spend over $2000.00 two replace both lower control arms. Took it literally down the street to another place and they said only one needed to be replaced and it would be about 500.00.
