"Online" and "remote" mean somewhat different things in higher education. This is not online, it's remote, meaning classes will still be held synchronously, but students will attend digitally. In a truly online format, learning is asynchronous and you don't meet as a class at all.

That’s what some universities said in the spring but a lot of professors ended up doing pre recorded videos so students could watch at any time.

They hadn't planned for it in the spring and were just scrambling to make it work at all...online, remote, whatever. Most faculty weren't given explicit standards, just were told to make it work to the best of their ability.
But with this announcement coming now two months before the semester, they will almost certainly outline stronger standards for online vs. remote for faculty to follow.
Harvard's press release very specifically references remote learning, not online. I guarantee you the Harvard administration knows what that means.

Less than 20% of Harvard students pay full price. 20% pay nothing, 60% pay less than $12,000 per year. Anyone can afford to go to Harvard if they can get accepted.

Not to mention that we have sold out untold thousands of US kids so we can import Chinese and other foreign students to fill up those slots for more money. We have also guaranteed student loans that cant be shed in bankruptcy so these same kids can get in copious amounts of debt before the graduate ensuring that they wont be financially viable for years to come. I could go on and on but I really do hope this is that this is the day of reckoning for higher ed, its desperately needed.

No online education is worth that cost
My dad lost his job a few months after I started at LSU, I had to take out loans to keep going there while my family resettled their finances so my siblings could go to school. I was a dumb kid who got talked into staying there by my "counselor" when a real counselor would have told me to go to BRCC and try to get instate tuition while things calmed down. I didnt do this obviously and graduated with a bunch of debt that I have fortunately paid off but I had to make a bunch of personal sacrifices like living at home to get to this goal. I know better than a lot of the people on here do about living with student loan debt, hindsight is 50/50 but if I could give my younger self advice it would be what I just said above.

Crazy as this is Nigel, it does seem like one positive we will get out of this.
