When you start looking at the backgrounds of several artists, you find out that they were not found just laboring in some club somewhere and a "scout" found them.
Guys like Connick had help getting noticed just like Bon Jovi whose cousin was a sound engineer at the Power Station in New York and knew how to get him in front of record industry guys.
In the case of Connick it was more than his Dad as DA. Sr. was a pretty good musician in his own right, but it was that Dad knew guys like Harold Batiste and Allen Toussaint that got him in the door. Toussaint had a studio and connections in the R&B world. Batiste had worked in Television as Sonny &Cher's musical director among others
Whitney Houston had Dionne Warwick who knew Clive Davis.
There are countless other examples.

The NOHC has a wonderful exhibit on incarceration in Louisiana. It is unkind to the elder Connick and I doubt that Connick Jr would want the national intelligentsia to catch wind of it.
