Sorry bro, I know it’s tough. I still have nightmares about when I had to put mine down

That is the only trouble with dogs
I have found that the best thing to do is to get another dog ASAP. That's what I did about 13 years ago when I had to put my dog down. I got a new pup within a week. I had to put him down on a Tuesday and the following Monday I had a new pup.
I couldn't get out of the routine I had with the one I had to put down. I would wake up in the morning and go let him out, realize he wasn't there anymore and then put food in his bowl. I have to have the routine I have with my dogs. And I need to have them to talk to so I don't end up talking to myself.

I've had to put down a couple great dogs. I like to think they're in heaven with my grandmother and they're begging for treats and being rambunctious and having a great time.

we got Mikie a couple months after we had put down another old dog.
i didn’t really want another one, but just scrolling through Craiglist i saw his pic (he was about 3 months old at time) i said “that’s my dog!” and went got him that day. and he’s been my right hand ever since.
we still have another dog here, so i’m not looking to get one right now.
but one day i’ll see a picture somewhere and just know “that’s my dog!”

Sorry to hear this. It's always tough. The only problem with dogs is that they never last long enough.

I had to do the same thing to my GSP last night. Her legs gave out completely when she’d try to stand up. That’s when we knew it was time. Even though it was the right decision it was still the hardest thing I’ve done in my life.
They are always gone too soon. But at least they are back to full throttle doing what they loved again. Sorry for the loss man, we will see them again someday

I have 2 dogs and that is why I have one. The one I got after my other dog passed. I was looking and saw him. He was actually the last one in his litter left. The first night I had him I put a towel next to me and let him sleep there and he slept as close as he could possibly get to me the whole night and that sucka has been attached to me ever since.
My other dog, someone gave this girl a puppy for her child. She was gone for 12+ hrs during the day and the pup stayed in the kennel, she let her out when she got home, put her right back in when they went to bed so she was staying 15, 16 hrs a day in the kennel. She has jack Russell in her. That's not a dog that wants to be in a kennel. She was giving her away so I took her because my other puppy was so attached to me I thought another dog could help with that. Instead I ended up with 2 dogs attached to me, who like to pick on each other.

People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?
Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay for as long as we do
Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
* When your loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
* Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
* Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.
* Take naps.
* Stretch before rising.
* Run, romp, and play daily.
* Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
* Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
* On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
* On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
* When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
* Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
* Be faithful.
* Never pretend to be something you’re not.
* If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
* When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.
That’s the secret of happiness that we can learn from a good dog.

the girl i got Mikie from was young and pregnant.
she said they couldn’t keep him in their little apartment with a baby.
Her husband was offshore at the time.
told her “lady, when he gets home, you’re gonna tell him you met random assed dude from Craigslist at a Walmart and got rid of his dog? …. good luck!”
by then Mikie was already sitting Shotgun looking at me like “we going somewhere or just chilling?”
so we drove the hour and a half home listening to an LSU Baseball game on the radio.

That’s tough man. Always hard to say goodbye.
I respect staying until the end too.
Rough stuff.

I didn't "want" to, but I "had" to.
I was there the first moment he came into our lives, so I had to be there for the last.
Wife and I were both there. He looked at me and his expression pretty much gave me permission.
He knew. And he knew I wasn't leaving him.

I feel for ya, man. We had a black lab (similar) for 15 years and went through the same thing. No dog will ever live up to Dixie so we haven't had another.

I’m with you. I do the same. Made the kids be there too.
That’s how you finish something you started as painful as it is.
