At least that fat guy she was with was honest about all of this. Gypsy was used by her mother in the late 1990’s and 2000’s to con people into thinking Gypsy was a special needs/handicapped child. This started in Lafourche parish and when people began to question if Gypsy was really that way, Gypsy’s mother disappeared with Gypsy and moved to Missouri where they started the con again under the guise they were Hurricane Katrina refugees and Gypsy’s medical records were conveniently lost in the storm making it easier to start the con.


As Gypsy grew up she finally realized she was not special needs, but her mother didn’t want the scam exposed and kept Gypsy on a short leash trying to control her movements, actions, and communications.

In an act of defiance to her mother she started chatting up with a boy from another state. The boy traveled to Missouri where they met and went to the movies and eventually when back to Gypsy’s home and killed Gypsy’s mother, and took off back home to the boy’s home where they were eventually arrested for the murder.

Gypsy pled guilty to 2nd degree murder and served 8 years of a 10 year sentence.

There have been many books, documentaries, and series based on Gypsy’s story. Most famously, Hulu did an eight part series called The Act and Lifetime did a made for TV movie, but changed the characters’ names.

In 2022, Gypsy married Ryan Anderson while in prison and in 2024 were featured in the Lifetime docuseries Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up. The couple separated and later divorced in April of that year. She entered into a relationship with Ken Urker that same month. Their daughter was born in December 2024. Urker was the one was found deceased yesterday in Lafourche parish.
