You don't get it...they are doing something exceptional.
One other thing to consider is these soldiers will have this on their record their entire career. It is a way to highlight future leaders. It is competitive to be on that team. Their being on that team will elevate their careers.

Do they stand guard when it is dangerous, i.e. lightning? I am all for this except when their lives are at risk; I'm sure the fallen would not want someone to be injured guarding their rotting bones.

It is a high honor to do what they do. Those are the guys this country needs would have given anything to be one. I took part in over 60 funerals doing the 21 gun salute it is the most memorable and rewarding act I've been a part of stateside.

Did any of you ever see the story of the guard that was an LSU fan? He was allowed to watch the 2007 mat'l championship game when he wasn't on guard, but had to hold his rifle at some arm extended position while he did so. Pretty cool story
