Thank you for serving in that capacity. Our Honor Guards are a great special duty across all services. I've been particularly proud of my airmen who were members of the Honor Guard wherever I've been stationed.

Our govt sucks but how the frick is it "imperialistic"? We leave as soon as we are done. We haven't conquered and kept anything significant since the south.

The Buckingham Palace guards carry FN/FAL's or whatever the British Army uses operationally. It really clashes with their uniforms. Their official purpose is more than ceremonial, and they are officially the palace guards, but if something went down, I imagine there's a QRF around there that would be on scene in under a minute. So do they really need an ugly plastic AR, even it has a 30 round magazine?

They carry the latest iteration of the SA-80.

I don't think they have ammo, but they do have a fixed bayonet.

A QRF is very close.

Don't feed the troll. You'll never convince people who are like that. But you're correct, we are the only country that consistently tries to get the country we just pummeled back on their feet. After the war with Mexico we could have just annexed it but we didn't AND we gave them a ton of money to help rebuild when we left and we still behave that way.

genuineLSUtiger is an idiot and this isn't really the right thread for this argument, but come on:

if you think we don't do that, well... don't know what to tell you

A very general definition of imperialism. Where did you get that, DU?

I can guess. It's just silly when you think about it. If only we all had the dedication and sense of duty The Old Guard has.

Think about what those guys do.

I was referring to the downvote of my original post, not what the Sentinel guards do. There's nothing silly about honoring the unknowns.

I know you said if it's unguarded but I'd pay good money to see them try now.

Regarding imperialism, you guys are both wrong.

The US annexed territories after the Spanish-American War.

The US decided to project power and influence in a greater capacity after 100M lives were lost in the first 50 years of the twentieth century. I'd like to think we prevented additional lives being lost. Considering the USSR was on Europe's doorstep, WWIII would have happened if the US went back to isolationism

Regarding why we guard the tomb. We guard it because we choose to guard it. In remembrance of those who laid down their lives and were not afforded a proper funeral recognizing their sacrifice.

As a 3rd generation military man, I see those guards as vital. They ensure that when you fight/die for this nation, you will be honored no matter what. It takes a special breed indeed.
