Probably a phrase we have all heard. There is definitely some truth behind it as is shown by powerlifters and strongmen reach their peak in their mid to late thirties or even early forties. What is the science behind this? The peak performance for overall athleticism and things like running seem to peak much sooner.

There are 2 proper strength terms. Old man strength. And retard strength.

Mainly muscle memory. Over time the brain becomes more efficient at using the body's muscles to accomplish more work with less energy.

More science. It’s long, and difficult to read, especially if you have retard strength.

It takes a lot of years of training to get really really strong. Decades really.

Retard strength is NGAF about hurting yourself in the process of overpowering someone else.

I think some of "old man strength" comes from a decrease in flexibility.

If you ever lock horns with an old baw, they may be strong, but that "stiffness" is hard to wrestle em.

Athleticism peaks 25-30. Raw, static strength can increase into the 40s.

I think it’s just the years of training. I’m definitely stronger in a lot of the Olympic lifts at 38 than I was in my early/mid 20s.

Just a lot easier to tweak something

I’ll say this. My paw paw turned valves for 30 years in the oil fields after being in WW2, and boxed in high school and in the Army. He died at 88 a few years ago. I would bet money at age 85 he still could have whooped my 30 year old arse. You shook his hand and immediately knew that wasn’t someone you wanted to fight with.
I actually arm wrestled him when I was in my twenties, when I was strong, and he was toying with me before he slammed me as an 80 year old.

This.

Dad strength is next level. My dad is 61 and he would whip my arse, I’m sure of it. I might be able to beat up your dad, but I can’t beat up my own dad. Just not possible, this is science

Adrenaline rush strength is stronger than any other human strength measurement. I weigh 160 lbs but put a wrecked car on top my kid and I guarantee I’m picking it up on my own.

The last guy who tried to tap into that strength fricked himself up and was left a homeless drifter.

30s into 40s I remained strong. I'm 47 now and the thing I'm really noticing is not a decline in strength but little aches and pains all the time especially in my joints.
