I've lived without it in China. Involved me opening the window during summer evenings and lighting a furnace during the winter. Granted, it didn't get that hot in Beijing, especially in the evenings, but it was manageable.

My grandparents lived in a house built in the 1890's that didn't have central a/c or even window units. They had tall ceilings, a lot of tall windows (went from the floor up) with screens, and a wrap around porch shaded by large live oaks. They also had ceiling fans in just about every room.
Even in 100+ heat is wasn't unbearable.

Same here...those late 60's/early 70's window units weighed a ton.

Growing up in the South having central A/C was something that was just expected. I moved to NYC during the December months so central A/C wasn't on my mind when we moved into our apartment. The first day we needed it was when I realized we didnt' have central A/C. We had radiators for the heat. Central A/C isn't that common in the northeast.
And they call us backwards...
Why anyone would live with all that snow, rude people and no AC is beyond me.

I grew up in Denham without AC. lots of fans and open windows. It was miserable. Now, as a successful adult living in South Bend, IN, the thermostat stays parked on 68 whether it is 5 degrees or 95 degrees outside.
My Indiana native wife hates it, but knows better than to think about touching the thermostat.

I'm 53, parents always had AC. But visiting my grandparents in Natchitoches Parish they only ran it once all summer: one Saturday night when the preacher came over for dinner. To beat the heat we'd knock off of whatever work the farm needed after dinner (lunch) and played cards underneath a big oak tree.
At night they had a whole house attic fan...by day break it would finally cool down.

If you didn't have AC it wasn't as bad. It's when you are used to AC is when it's bad. I used to work about 6 months a year without AC (hot humid jungle). When I would come home, my house at 75 was freezing.

My spouse had AC in his house when he grew up but his parents choose not to use it so he's used to not having a cool house. I catch him turning our AC temp up even during the summer and I kinda freak out. He's used to it so doesn't bother him to not have a cool house.

No AC in my house growing up. We slept with the windows open. If you didn't have AC, you didn't know what you were missing so it wasn't that big of a deal.

I grew up in a house in NO East that was designed for central AC but after it broke my parents decided to just use the attic fan...for 5 years! (Yes, we had the poor's.) My mom used to fix gumbo for out-of-town guests in the summer and serve it in the hot kitchen! I'm surprised no one died of heat stroke. We barely noticed but those cousins from Washington state sure looked funny sweating buckets. Oh, and LSU was the first air conditioned school I went to but my dorm had no AC. We just hung out in the union until dark, then used box fans.

Mom and Dad didn't put a ac unit in till I was around 16. Attic fan and windows open. This was in New Orleans back in the late 1960's. One didn't have to lock up the house back then.

Home made window fan. Pulled so hard, sucked wall paper off the walls. It worked

friend of my inlaws is in his upper 80s, has never had AC

I'm old, so I know for a fact that most homes in BR didn't have A/C until the 50's or even until the 1960's as was the case at the home I was raised until I was 10 years old in 1961. That is when we got a window unit. Houses weren't built like they are today. They were built for air flow, with many windows, and doors that had screen doors behind them. Houses were built off the ground, and with 36 or 48 inch attic fans in the hallways that pulled massive amounts of air through every open door and window. I don't remember that it got very hot during the summers when the attic fan was running. Those were the days when you could leave your windows, and doors open without being concerned with being murdered, and no one even gave that a second thought.

My dad (in his 60s) has told me stories about waking up covered in sweat in the summer. My dad's bedroom was in the attic and warm air rises and no ac.

Bet it smells great in there.
Are you under the assumption that an A/C cleans your home or some shite?

We didn't have any air in school either. Open windows. My parents had one small window air conditioner for our big home. None for the hot upstairs where my bedroom was. Didn't really bother me. Now I can't go without central air

I was born in the early 60s in MS. Had A/C in the house but not in school or in our cars. I spent many a hot afternoon waiting in the car while my mom was shopping and didn't won't to be bothered by 3 kids. We would turn the radio volume wide open and wipers on so when she cranked the car it would scare the shite out of here

My girlfriend is overly accustomed to A/C. I can ride around in the truck with just the vent air going full blast and windows down and feel fine. She gets in and it's windows up and MAX A/C! Damn average MPG is down to 15.1
