I usually encounter several Mexicans throughout the day and usually give them an holla.

Is it racist for me to assume they speak Spanish, which it’s pretty obvious they do? Or would it be more racist for me to assume they don’t speak English?

Is there some sort of agreement or arrangement we have with them?

I always greet people in French that way they think I’m weak and I won’t be threatening to them.

Just say Como estas or Como te va, if you want to sound a little less gringo-ish. I used to work with Hondurans that my uncle hired for his company when I was in high school, and they appreciate it even when a gringo knows a little Spanish.

I let them make the first move. Nod head and wait to see what they say first.

If it's fine for them to assume you speak English, then there's nothing wrong with you assuming they speak Spanish.

Now if you go up to a random black guy and greet him saying "yo mane wassup" you might have some problems.

It's probably more insulting to assume they're mexican instead of from another central american country.

Cant really think of a reason this would be racist other than everything is racist now.
