Several feet of snow and he's not getting anywhere fast out of DC on saturday. It usually takes airlines a few days to catch up with crews after cancelled flights

it depends less on snow amount and more on visibility/ceilings. heavy snow (1/4 mi vis) and/or 400 ft base cloud layer will shut down most any airport.

I imagine IAD is perfectly capable of clearing out just about any amount of snow after it falls

oh yeah, I am fully prepared for what is about to happen. But while familiar with the city, it's not the easiest for relocating, plus my office is right @ Faneuil Hall, so driving/parking is out of the question for now. Proximity to the T for the 1st year is very important while I get better acclimated.

cost of living was a major sticking point in my salary negotiations

They'll shut the airports down. The airlines don't want planes stranded here. Flights will be doubtful on Friday once it starts and no planes in or out if we get what they're calling for on Saturday.

The GFS has been abysmal beyond 3 days. That is 11 days away. Good luck with that verifying.

That was a 10 day map but most of the snow falls in the first 120 hrs or so. All the models have been struggling lately with this frantic split flow, I mean the AAM has been off the chart. But yea, the GFS has been pretty much crap here lately.

and the more I forecast snow up here the more I realize that all the models are worthless. Snowfall totals have so many variables that they're basically impossible to forecast, and it's pretty easy to get snow in the first place while none of the models are forecasting it.

There is a reason some of the biggest bust in weather forecasting history are snow storm forecast This upcoming system is going to be so dynamic that its going to be nearly impossible to forecast the northern edge, the deform band, the areas that might mix or switch over, etc etc etc

it's not real until the HRRR says it's real and even then I have my doubts. Good thing I only forecast 36 hours max.

I pretty much hate the HRRR! That dryline is going to go off! Oh wait, no it's not, my bad. But the good thing about the HRRR, if you don't like what it spits out then you can get something different in an hour.

I honestly feel that the models have done worse than they did a few years ago. Maybe the upgrades are to blame?

There were some NWP sessions at the AMS conference that touched on this. I haven't looked into the associated papers but the gist of it is that there appear to be some drawbacks of running the globals at a higher resolution out to 240 hrs or so. They are preforming better at 500mb and with the overall synoptic setup but are having issues with smaller scale surface features and the role they play as things grow upscale. This has been pretty obvious on the Para Euro, it has spit out some crazy solutions for D6 - D10.

18Z GFS is backing off of the Boston snow too. Still has it in for DC though... check out that 37 inch maximum

00z trying to get y'all back in the game, but seriously, y'all don't need anymore after last year. Absolute crushing for NOVA/DC, it looks like my old house scores 30+ this run.

The predictions for my area have been everything from 10" to 22".

I'm flying into PIT on Thursday night, leaving again on Sunday. Looks like most of the weather will be east of us though.
