Maybe I'm paranoid but banging atoms together at nearly the speed of light to create mini black holes and defying the laws of gravity on this planet just seem like bad ideas

Very well could have been, we do not know. While dinosaurs were roaming Earth for 200million years, advanced life could have been on Mars. Humans have only been on Earth for 200,000 years, and there are already civilizations lost to time and mother nature we may never find. While cool sounding, this sounds suspiciously like simple electromagnetism or something similar.
