my dad is almost 70 and he told me his father used to spank him and his brothers everyday when they were kids whether they did something or not, just to let them know it would be worse if they ever did something lmao gotta love these old schoolers

Exactly, but most of the posters here are childless and think anything short of a closed-hand hit to the face is perfectly acceptable discipline.
If someone confronts you for "disciplining" a child in Alabama, you've probably crossed the line.

This is a little awkward to say, but in case you haven't realized, your dad was abused as a kid.
I'm sure he was "loved" and turned out fine, but it doesn't change the fact that he was abused.
