I mean, if we're going to have any debate over laws or rules or morals or ethics, then the basic principle that violence is wrong is a pretty good, rudimentary foundation to start with, right? Violence = bad; not a very big leap.
If you can only teach someone with the threat of violence, then you're a shitty teacher.

Good for you. Any parent should know violence towards their children is wrong. I abhor child abuse and give a lot of my time and effort volunteering with kids who have had to suffer through the nightmare of it. Breaks my heart and makes my blood boil at what adults can do to innocent kids.

Getting a kid's attention with a harmless spank or slap is very effective and is not in any way abusive.

And as for my daughter, that was when she was in diapers dumbass. She's 7 now and I can't remember the last time she got a spanking.
