My son is 14 so spanking won't work. Grounding is what works with him. My daughter is not far from turning 8. Can't remember the last time she got a spamming but I'd say it was at least two years ago and my wife gave it to her. And before you ask, the pulling the pants down was only when she was in diapers.
Spankings have always been rare around our house and reserved for only the most serious offenses. Majority of the time, they get grounded in one way or another.

Punishment like that shouldn't be done in public.
Certain levels of affection and punishment should be done in private.
im not one for spanking, I find it to be pretty ineffective, and it was on me when I was young. To each their own, but don't do it in public.

When parents decided to be friends with their kids instead of parenting their kids, that's when the downfall started.
