Literally the only reason it made the list. Wanted to sneak in a climate change blurb.

Family lore includes a legend of Great, Great, Great Grandmother cooking a meal in their home for Don Jose Llulla, known to them as Sir Pepe. It was the summer of 1887, and Sir Llulla was quite elderly, but he still regaled with tales of bounty and adventure. He was a Teetotal, although he apparently owned bars in New Orleans, which caused a stir at the table.
Friend Tulane LSU, "Pepe" Llull is my 4X great uncle...his sister Francesca is my 3X great grandmother...at that point in his life he was living on Grand Terre (where Fort Livingston is) and was looking at putting some orange groves at Caminada...
What's amusing to my family is that my father worked for Freeport Sulphur Company and was captain of the supply boat that went out to the Grand Isle and Caminada sulphur mines...

Friend,
The timeline fits perfectly, as that was when they had a house apparently in the middle of the island near the cemetery. They spent summers there to escape Yellow Jack, but did not rebuild after 1888. Speaking of cemeteries, I recall your story about your great uncle owning the St Vincent DePaul cemetery in the upper 9th Ward in the thread about Uptown’s St Vincent dePaul cemetery. What a wonderful and puzzling world it is once we start to see all its pieces.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

quote:Grand Isle was a very posh resort back in the 19th century. Maybe his main impressions come from novels written back then.
I'm guessing that the author has never been to Grand Isle?
Clearly, he's never watched strippers with c section scars fight each other for hundred dollar bills dangling from fishing outriggers, to the delight of howling, drunken masses.
Or maybe he has.

We used to go to the lingerie shows at Romes when we were like 15. It was mostly Bourbon street strippers with track marks but young me thought that it was awesome

Is this kind of like how you make Who's Who Among American High School Students?

I mean Washington is beautiful and all but can we also talk about it being #1?
Posted on 9/7/20 at 12:54 pm to toosleaux
I have been to seven of these!

People from southern Louisiana take Grande Isle for granted. People from the outside realize its beauty.

I am in my 50's. Since I was a teenager there has been talk that Grand Isle will disappear.
It's still there......I still won't go.

at Uganda making the list.
Uganda is frickin' amazing. Quite safe as well. If you like the outdoors you would likely love Uganda.

I was thinking this is some sort of envirowacko scare list of "disappearing" places you have to see before they do

Um, where the hell is Pascagoula?
But seriously I respect a lot of the selections as trying to get people to think outside of the box some more as far as where they travel, but... Grand Isle, Uganda, Tajikistan?
