You do realize Catholic schools take kids who aren’t Catholic right…

That being said for Old Metairie residential neighbors…sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t.

I don’t disagree with you. I would hope that when the building is sold it’s done so with the best interests of residents in mind, but we’ll see.

You can bet it will be commercial, mixed use at best. That way the parish benefits from sales tax and property tax.

I remember when Grace King had a platoon system. One group of students went to school from something like 7AM to noon and another group went from 1PM to 6PM.
So there were actually two separate student bodies using the same building.

The Metairie road front will, but not the back fields towards the tracks. You can bet your arse it will be zoned R1.

Pretty sure that was EJ. That was before Bonnabel was built. There were two girls public schools already. Grace King and Riverdale. EJ was the only boys school until they opened Bonnabel.

From Wikipedia
quote:

East Jefferson High School had been using "A.M. & P.M. platoon shifts" where the first classes went to school from 6 a.m. until noon, and the second shift went from 12:30 to 6:30. In 1973 they started building a new all male school named Alfred T. Bonnabel High. Even though it would not be completed until 2 years later, they decided to call the morning shift “Bonnabel” and the afternoon shift “East Jefferson”. The following year the two shifts flip-flopped. The third year the student that had been using the name “Bonnabel” moved into their new building just north of I-10 between David Dr. and Williams Blvd.

It will most likely be both commercial (on Met rd) and residential (on Magnolia). Metairie road has been revitalized over the last 5 or so years with multiple commercial strips from down by the tracks where city Greens is a tenant, and all the way to Causeway where Loft 18 is. The front of the school could be another commercial buildout, and the back where the gym and football field are could add quite a few new houses that would be worth close to 500 a foot upon completion.

Jesus, those poor kids… Bonnabel might as well be a New Orleans public school..
Honestly there isn’t much difference between Grace King and Bonnabel. They are both majority Hispanic with pretty similar demographics and some students went to elementary/middle school together.

I can’t speak to the context of this particular situation, but I’ve been telling you that public education in its current form is unsustainable. More schools will be closing until there’s nothing left but state subsidized daycare unless things change quickly.

All the JP schools were fine until the advanced academies and charters popped up

They sound good in theory, but unfortunately, parents believe any school that says magnet or academy is better and it leads to neglect of the other schools

They were not good schools though. Maybe the buildings were in a little better shape.

Grace King High School students will be absorbed into Bonnabel High School

This might ruffle a few feathers.

Also from a facilities perspective, Bonnabel looks pretty rough. Grace King and Haynes are probably worse though. To be fair all of the public high schools in Jefferson could use big upgrades from a facilities perspective. Seems odd that you have such an old dump like Haynes in a huge parish with a sizable tax base.

I take it that since GK is going to have Haynes students, they will actually try to maintain the structure. Or is this a temporary thing until they find another campus for Haynes closer to the old one?

Which is funny because as long as I can remember Bonnabel has always been named Alfred Bonnabel Magnet Academy High School. I guess having both Magnet & Academy in the name cancels each other out.

ALWAYS?

Since it opened in 1976?

Hell, no. That was a relatively recent (last 10-20 years) thing and means diddly-poo, just semantics.

In the 60's and 70's, when they were all boys or all girls, they were decent schools.
