I forgot all about that! Good one! I graduated from King and got to hear that all the time in the 90s.

JP school board about to make millions selling that land…

I’m sure the Metry Road front will be commercial zoned and the rest R1…

Side note : How long before Ellen steps in?

All are long overdo. GK enrollment been in a free fall, large % of home zone kids wouldn’t step foot in a public school (traditional)

Back in the 2000s there were a good bit of normal middle class white kids at GK who couldn’t afford a school like country day and I guess weren’t catholic. Where do people like that go now ?

Haynes, Kenner Discovery… or they moved to the Northshore

JP a few years ago had so much open space in their freshman classes, they instituted open enrollment, hence now they’re all select schools. Maybe that policy will stop now that the remaining schools will have better numbers

I expect to see changed district lines and Higgins and Riverdale back in 5A soon.

As a West Jeff baw, Grace King had the finest Latinas by far when I was growing up. Their reputation will not be forgotten

Wouldn’t most of them go to Riverdale since it’s basically a straight shot up Causeway?

It is pretty hysterical hearing the old alumni bitching up a storm because their kids now have to go to a slightly worse school so “the elitist kids” at Haynes can get a better school. And if you ask any of them, their kid is a hell of a lot more intelligent than half the kids at Haynes, but Haynes is getting their way because of all the right white people

Both my kids go to Haynes. I hope they sell that property and build a Walmart. Screw the elitists in that neighborhood.

If this Walmart was properly zoned, had adequate parking, and didn’t have a tarp on the roof from a hurricane from 2 years ago, it would still be an improvement over the eyesore that is Haynes. 70’ x 120’ lots go for over a million in that neighborhood even with that shithole. I would imagine property values will spike more now. Good riddance.

Or the old Metairie complainers got their way.

The Haynes campus is a dump and worth a shite ton of money as land. This has nothing to do with Old Metairie residents.

Consolidating schools allows JP to focus more resources into certain schools, save money on buildings and upkeep, and get some of these old properties off their hands. Sucks for people who will commute from bucktown to Kenner, but it will be an overall positive.

They haven’t made any improvements or even repairs to Haynes campus as this has been a plan in development for years to abandon the site and sell the land. A top 3 public school in the state and it is an embarrassment facilities wise.

That being said for Old Metairie residential neighbors…sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t.

Jumped on fb last night just to read some of the posts/responses from people I know from King. Saw 6-8 different people bitching about it, and only 1 has an actual kid there. The others live on the northshore, out of State, or have kids in catholic school. Yet, they want to save King. Hell, even if they still lived in the area, most of them would not send their kids to King now because it's not the same as it was in the late 90s & early 00s.

The one with the kid is upset they have to send their kid to Bonnabel. They actually live in Bonnabel's district and is one of the ones I have seen claim their kid is smarter than half the kids at Haynes. Someone asked why they don't just get him tested and have him go to Haynes; that was a fun 20 minute read.

A lot of this is coming from overly emotional people, but I have been hearing they haven't been doing a lot of repairs to King either...until recently. Stories about contractors actually going into classrooms and taking measurements, finally fixing/replacing some of the a/c units.

If the plan was to abandon Haynes campus for years, wonder if they intentionally also neglected King knowing they would end up completely redoing a lot of the stuff around campus when Haynes moves there.
