Good morning half cat addition

Went outside to walk the dog and there was a dead cat on the lawn. Well, not a whole cat, just the front half. Back half was gone with an intestine trail a short distance away. (Picture the opening scene of jaws where they find the girl on the beach)
What eats a cat in the suburbs? We are in a nice neighborhood but do have a piece of property behind us that isn’t lived on currently. How do you investigate this further for safety of family and pets? Do you set traps? What is the bait? Do you use more cats like they did with the goat in Jurassic Park? All guidance appreciated.
Bonus fact....it had a minty smell to it. Sort of like icy hot.

No Chinese that I know of but I haven’t asked every neighbor their nationality.
Had to put the poor fella in a bag. So about a shovels distance away.

Well good on you for taking care of it. You know most people would just drive past it and then bitch to the HOA

You’d be surprised how coyotes can survive and thrive in urban areas. Probably a coyote did that.

Maybe it was just resting.
Did you try to wake it?
Ascertaining these things can be tricky business, it’s why Coroners have jobs.
ETA: And before you answer, try not to be so contraryman.

Are you on the northshore?

The cat was a stiff. It was passed on. It wouldn’t have boomed if you put 3000 volts through it. Definitely an ex-cat.
But how do you explain the mint smell.

Likely Coyotes.
I’m hearing Southdowns (and some neighboring areas) have a pretty big pack of them pretty much feasting nightly on cats.
