I have never broken 80. Would be nice to shoot upper 70's low 80's consistently though.

I used to. I also played at least 9 holes every single day when I used to. Now, not so much

Work on your lag putting, learn how to not have a huge score on one hole, work on using 8 or 9 iron on short chips.

It's harder now because I play a lot less than when I was in highschool. It's still doable if my short game isn't complete shite. Which usually isn't the case.

Question for those of you who are in that low 80 and below range:
how often do you play v. how often do you go to the range?

I'm 80's-88's now. I was 75's - 82's before.

Before I was in high school and college. I played daily, never went to the range. That's when I was peaked.

Now, I work. I go to range 3-4x week during lunch and hit a big bucket and/or chip and putt. I have not been playing many rounds, but that's by design. I'm starting to swing back into them now.

I wanted to make a huge drop in strokes fast, so I experimented with the range only deal for 2 months. Hopefully when I start playing rounds more this summer I'll see that I'm back in the better scores.

First thing you should do is quit worrying about your score.
Concentrate more so on every shot and you'll be lot better off.

I shot 79 one time. Took an eagle on the 17th hole to make it happen. Next day I shot a 92. Haven't broken 80 since.

figure out your worst thing and work with a teaching pro at your local public course.

be systematic if you really want to do it. It has nothing to do with a mythical barrier.

Can you drive over 300 and keep it in the fairway? That is the easiest thing to learn.

Consider your flexibility. work on that if you are stiff. its fairly expensive but a full course of rolfing will change your body for the next several years.
You can skip the parts where they do your head if you want to go on the cheap. .

that's the ticket. practice.

he needs a good teacher too.

stay off the course until he can actually use a few clubs (Driver, 3, 5, 9 and putter) with confidence.

Range - as little as possible
Play - as much as possible

Unless you are really, really good and have the time to invest, the range is a sucker's bet.

I broke 80 for the first time when I was 12 but didn't consistently break it until I was 13-14. From there on I was in the 70's pretty much every round until I quit during college. Now I play 4-5 times a year and shoot anywhere from 75-85. I really got back in to golf about 6 years ago and was in the mid-low 70's with a handful of rounds under par, but then I had kid.

A combination of laziness and kids will definitely ruin your golf game.

It doesn't get any easier. My advice is limit big scores as much as possible and keep your emotions in control when it does happen. I am a miserable fricking human after a double or triple and it ruins me.

I shot 87 at Beaver yesterday afternoon. My best 12 holes I was -2. The other 6 holes I was +17. This included a hextuple bogey 10 on Hole 14.

To get into middle and lower single digit handicaps with any consistency, you have to learn how and where to miss, have to be good to very good around the greens, and have to learn to play each shot in the moment.

Cracking par or 70 is a whole different ballgame. It becomes about par 5 play and simply being a superior driver at that point.

Damn - feel bad for ya man.

My worst burn was not quit that bad....27 holes, was even par through 26....made a 10 on the last hole, a par 4.

Next to worst blow up - Shot 36 tips and down on the front then carded a 50 on the back....throw up potential.

Heck I have shot a 99 on Saturday and a an 80 on Sunday - just go have fun and let the score settle out

If you really want to break 80 it's fairly easy and This is how you do it (most people don't have the mental toughness to do it) :

NO BIG NUMBERS ... That means if you're not overly confident with the driver - DONT HIT IT - EVER ... Pick a club off the tee that you are 100% sure will be in the fairway -- could be a driver could be a 6 iron .. Whatever just stick to the plan ..

NO PENALTY SHOTS .... Don't hit it in the water ... If there is trouble aim away from it .. Even if that means aiming away from the green or laying up ...

NO TWO CHIPS .... Practice your short game enough that you can get the ball on the green from aroind the green on the first try

Do those three things and you will be under 80 in no time

Most people don't have the time to play a jerk off sport that allows you to drink while you play it, and actually gets harder when you decide to lose weight and get in shape.

So get the frick out with your mental fortitude crap.

Try eating less than 20 carbs a day if you're so mentally tough.
