I’ve had 5 Goldens in my life and yes, they are the greatest dog breed bar none.

Yes they shed.
Yes, as a large breed they don’t have as long a life span as ankle biters.

Those two things pale in comparison to all of the awesome stuff they bring to life.

I’ll never own any other breed.

My golden is almost 12 years old. He has been an incredible friend and I love that dog more than most of my family.
I can’t think of a better dog for my family.

That being said, when we were living in Minnesota we barely noticed the shedding, but now in Georgia is really bad.

We may consider another breed when Cooper’s time on the earth is gone.

Sadly the breed I want, Bernese mountain dog, isn’t practical either down south.

I've never owned Goldens, always Labs/Chesapeakes, German Shepherds and I currently have an adopted Airdale Terrier. However, my good friend who's lived in Atlanta and Austin respectively has owned nothing but Goldens (and one Coohound) since I met him in 1995. What he does is give his Goldens summer shaves twice in the summer. They turn out looking like a Chesapeake or a shaggy Lab as far as appearance. Google "summer shave Golden retriever" for examples.

The shave eliminates most/all of the shedding issues and his dogs are much more comfortable in the summer.

Never met a Golden that wasn’t a lovable hard head. Great dogs, but having grown up with Labs and German Shepherds, I would easily get one of the above over a Golden.

One of my daughter’s friends “gifted” her a pit lol. My daughter’s full grown, not a child btw. Not ideal but I’m coming around on him.

My parents got us a Golden when I was 11. All the comments about them being stupid didn't apply to this one. Smart as hell and excellent with little kids. The most gentle dog I've ever been around.

That's a Staffordshire Terrier, not a "pit".

Likewise but I like Goldens as a breed as well. With German Shepherds as you know they blow their coat 3-4 times a year. I could probably make the batting for a set of pillows from the hair I used to sweep up from each shepherd. Unbelievably intelligent dogs though.

I recently came to the decision that I want a golden for my first dog out of college. I initially wanted a german shepherd but heard that golden’s are good for first time dog owners. Any thoughts?

Penultimate derives from the Latin words paene (almost) and ultima (last, final, or furthest).

So, almost last or almost final example of perfection in animal form. But who cares about accuracy or correct usage of words, amirite?

My 2 cents:

Both breeds are extremely smart and loyal. They are both very trainable.

The difference is in disposition.

German Shepherds tend to lock on to one person in the family, and that person becomes their one and only "alpha". That person is their pack leader, and everyone else in the house is just part of the pack.

Golden's will recognize the pack leader, but are more likely to see all people in the family equally and want their love and attention.

Anyone who says Goldens are dumb is either fricking clueless, or has only been exposed to a Golden that the owner didn't spend the time training.

I've got a 4 month old Golden laying on my feet right now. He is super smart and loving. He figured out house training in about 3 weeks. He now goes to the back door and barks to go out.

He figured out sit, stay, and shake in about 4 weeks.

When I feed him, and my 10 year old Golden, they both sit and wait until I've filled their bowls and set them on the floor, and then said "good dogs", their key word allowing them to eat.

Goldens are smart and eager to please their owners. Like I said before, it's the only breed I'll ever own.

No doubt the n that! Until I had my own lab as an adult I never realized they had two shedding seasons. January-May and June-December. That double coat does some year around work!

What’s good not small, yappy dog breed for someone who works 10+ hours a day?
