We have a golden retriever and it’s unreal how awesome he is. He’s as smart as a person and speaks English.

pass on both.
Every white woman in suburbia under the age of 40 now has a Golden or a doodle.

That’s a bad thing?

Goldens are awesome, but all of my friends’ pitts have been great dogs as well, they’re just really hyper and affectionate, whereas the goldens are more chill once they’re grown. The perfect medium has been my aussie. Super snuggly and affectionate, playful and can run for days when he wants to, warms up quickly to guests, but also a chill couch potato when appropriate.

We lucked out and found a golden mutt being fostered on Petfinder in the Baton Rouge area. Great dog, adopted him at about 8 months old. Golden mixed with either Border Collie or Great Pyrenees
eta: Have to show some love for the other 2.

Ever since I watched Coraline with my kids, those dogs kind of freak me out.

GR are the most loyal dogs but also needy for attention...never met one that didn't want your hand on them at all times

Those were Scotties. Eli is a giant schnauzer. Totally different type of dog and 85 lbs.

My Aussie is like this as well, she will literally yell at me if I don't pet her...It is annoying while trying to catch a Sunday nap, but she earns it with the way she herds her sister (jack russel) into the house

Goldens are great, but I'll take a Border Collie.
If I need a herding dog with toughness, I'll take an Aussie. Mine is absolutely fearless. She goes berserk at varmints entering her "turf" She protects the house and any vehicle she's in.
She's whacked numerous copperheads. The first time I know of I was in the car at a KFC drive thru. Layla started going berserk. I thought she was going to tear up the car. There was no one else in line, so I let her out. She ran over to some landscape and whacked a copperhead.
She loves to patrol. She's not mean (as one poster suggested for Aussies), but she is fearless and tough.

Bro, this is what fearless looks like! But not really, she is just nosey. Always on the hunt for birds, search and detroy mode 24/7.

Our Aussie is 11 years old. She's calmed down some but still has tourette syndrome and gets really excited with new people.
Our Goldon is just 2 and is completely out of the chewing random things phase which is great. She's smart as hell though.
Both have been excellent dogs, especially with a 7 year old at home.

I'll echo the German Shepherd. My son wanted one right when quarantine hit and I was against it, but like always I give in to make him and the wife (no pics) happy. We've had her 9 months now and she is by far the best dog we've ever had. Smart, fun, loving and affectionate with the best disposition ever. I think I love her more than the wife and son and I didn't even want her in the beginning. Now I don't know what I would do without her. Great companion

Don't get me wrong, our golden is phenomenal with our kids, but damn he's dumb as hell.
