And I have no doubt the hidden part of those genealogy sites is to create a DNA database.

Well, after this, I think there’s no doubt about it now.

From 23 and Me:

You choose how your genetic information is used and shared with others. We tell you how those choices are implemented and how we collect, use and disclose your information.

We do not provide information to law enforcement unless we are required to comply with a valid subpoena or a court-ordered request

OK, OT'ers, it is time for some of you to get on your knees and beg me for forgiveness.

I said:

Rumor is that he was found through Ancestry (or 23&Me).

Is this a rumor you made up? I've been watching/reading coverage all evening and haven't heard anything about that.

And yes, it was a rumor I made up (and others on the Internet were speculating the same as well). It was an educated guess based on what was known and the cryptic Police presser on the day of his arrest. I put 2+3 together.

I think it's time we "start a conversation" which is all the rage these days.

Is it OK that Cops can go rummaging through private databases with VERY BROAD warrants searching for suspects? I am glad they got this guy, don't get me wrong, but c'mon this is going to open a can of worms. The Ancestry websites are going to have to address this - it is going to affect their bottom line and I doubt they are too happy about it.

So, I would like to see the warrant. The entire purpose of the 4th amendment warrant requirement was for warrants to be SPECIFIC. Police can't issue a "general warrant" for an entire neighborhood and break into everyone's house looking for a suspect. So, why can they do it with a private database?

The creeping power of the state...

Several california papers are saying GEDmatch, a public dna database people voluntarily submit to, is the source.

Its interesting that people seem much more concerned with protecting their absolute 2nd Amendment rights, but not quite as concerned with their 4th Amendment ones. And they both concern giving the government too much power that could potentially be abused. I think it’s as simple as we own/like guns, but other people commit heinous crimes. Kinda why the Patriot Act didn’t have much resistance by the general public. Not too get too far off the rails and into politics, I just think it’s hard to be consistent and non -hypocritical regarding these complex issues—it’s not easy.

That said, I think I’m fine with them having used an Ancestry.com type website to catch this guy. Especially if they have some sort of waiver you have to sign giving them permission. Eerily similar to the theory of what DELOS on Westworld is up to, though. And as technology gets better, we are likely gonna have to wrestle with some Minority Report type ethical conflicts before too long. What do we do if they can find and indentify “the serial killer gene.” “The psychopath gene?” “The sociopath gene?” “The not-so-nice-person gene?” Slippery slope to start skidding down.

Exactly you should never give away your dna to be logged and studied

Right? My dna is in codis already, so I'm blown away when people voluntarily give it up... especially publicly. The GED is short for gedcom, genealogical data communication. It's the system the mormons came up with for tracking us, for whatever reasons.

I have no problem with them resorting to this if they’ve exhausted their other options. I would have an issue if they try to use only this. Hopefully it will become a crime deterrent.

Very interesting. If so, then there is no 4th amendment issue. GEDMatch is known to be public and the user knows it is public before uploading his DNA to it.

But, yeah, with DNA technology where it is today, it is going to be very HARD for these serial rapists (and killers) to get away with shite for long. In fact, I am certain that's one of the reasons we have seen a drop in violent crime since the early 90's. It's just much harder to get away with it today than in the Golden State Killer's day.

Sorry, went off on a tangent, because ai think that’s gonna wind up being an interesting part of this. But back to the actual case—like a lot of you, apparently, I’ve been watching all the docs on this guy. I 1st hear about him maybe a year ago on a 1-hour ID show, I think that kinda focused a bit on Patton Oswald’s wife and her determination to find him and her naming him and whatnot. I watched that 5-part HLN series this month and then there was a 3-part series on some channel that aired not too long before the HLN one that I binged just before.

So, I had watched 8 full hours on this guy and read a ton of stuff online just in the last 6 weeks or so. Like I’m sure a lot of you too. I never thought in a million years they’d catch him, but catching him now amidst all this insane.(no pun intended). It can’t have been a coincidence. All this coverage had to have contributed to a vital tip or something. I can’t wait to hear my Michael Biehn-looking boy Paul Holes to talk about it. Anybody seen him yet? I didn’t catch him on any of the shows Wednesday night.

I was incredibly excited when I found out Wednesday(on here, of course). I texted my parents an article since they had watched some of the docs with me, slyly read as many articles at work as ai could without getting busted, and couldn’t wait to get home to watch the press conference. I remember when they caught BTK, the DC Sniper, the Unibomber vaguely, and I think even Gary Ridgeway before that. But nothing compared to the excitement of catching this dude. This story was just so captivating. But I knew that if they ever did—at his age—it would would kinda be disappointing. Or he would be, rather. And I was right. He’s just some regular old, ornery, “get-off-my-lawn” a-hole neighbor now. Nothing like the monster we’d all imagined. On the one hand, it’s even more scary, knowing guys like him can hide in plain site. But I’d be lying if I said his mug shot didn’t take away a bit from his myth.

Maybe. Could easily be these 3rd party places have a tiny box you're supposed to check if you don't want your info released to gedmatch. I just don't know enough here to absolve the state entirely of shenanigans, but I'm just not feeling it based on what I've read so far. I'm pretty cop hating libertarian, so really just hoping it is on the up and up so we don't get case law condoning whatever they did wrong

He did an interview with FOX. You can google it and a youtube video will come up. He was also on a HLN 1 hour show last night.

Absolutely insane that this guy was on no one's radar, and he was found this way.

I feel like that was a lie, and he was going to go off himself. Maybe, I'm grasping at straws though.
