When chat rooms first started (early to mid-90's)?
The dawn of AOL/yahoo messenger (late nineties)?
The rise of message boards (late 90's-early 2000's)?
The first year of Facebook/Myspace (circa 2005)?
The rise of multiple social media platforms and streaming (2006-2012)?

The current age with a boom in streaming, shopping, social media?

Or do you think it hasn't happened yet?

The rise of online shopping.

Everything else you listed contributed to the cesspool nature of the internet.

This past election will go down as the golden age. The internet took the MSM's balls and hung them from a rear view mirror.

The golden age was IMO around when chat rooms on AOL and instant messaging became prominent. Not long after that you could play Quake I deathmatches and Diablo online. At this time too the first web cams hit stuff like Mplayer and you had video chat rooms in their infancy. Message boards were there too already (and BBS's were around since the beginning)

So I'd say around 1997.

Social media ruined it and IMO and started the dark ages.

I would actually argue that social media has started a dark age for mankind again too.

While the internet has it's huge upside, it has as many if not many more downsides.

The internet is neither good nor bad. It is a tool that if used in the right way can rapidly expand your level of awareness or if used in the wrong way, turn you into a dolt.

The golden age will always be the current age as more and more info becomes available. Although Social media IMO has definitely become a downside, what is was intended for (instant connectivity to everyone on Earth) is still a remarkable thing. As with most things though, people suck and just took advantage of it and made it terrible.

Other than that, the amount of entertainment and media available online is ridiculous. I mean you don't even need a TV anymore. News at every corner of the planet is instantly available to everyone. That's remarkable.
