silk road was the golden age, being able to order rockets and cocaine to your house and pay with cryptocurrencies is about as good as it gets

I do miss the days when cocaine, 'nades and landmines could be ordered and delivered to my front door

I'd have to agree with this. Once all the narcissistic twats around the world found out they had a platform to promote themselves it went downhill from there.
A close second is Tumblr and the rise of the SJW.

Ahh, the days you could put out a hit on a person for pissing you off, literally order hookers AND blow, and get a rocket launcher delivered to your doorstep.

You don't know very much about the internet if you think 4chan isn't a powerful entity. See Josh's post.

The saddest part about that post is that those aren't even your pictures

When chat rooms first started (early to mid-90's)? The dawn of AOL/yahoo messenger (late nineties)? The rise of message boards (late 90's-early 2000's)? The first year of Facebook/Myspace (circa 2005)? The rise of multiple social media platforms and streaming (2006-2012)? The current age with a boom in streaming, shopping, social media? Or do you think it hasn't happened yet?
Early 2000s when Newgrounds was popular and message boards were starting to take off. Pirating music, movies, and games was incredibly easy as well.

The internet is an amazing asset and an equally amazing hindrance to culture and society as a whole. Overall, in all honesty, I think it's horrible on hundreds or thousands of levels. JMHO.

Back in the day , if we could get hands on one, we would hide a playboy in the woods and look at the same pictures over and over.
Now you perverts just google boobies and get thousands.

As a species, we don't have any kind of grasp on the consequences of the internet yet. I suspect if the world continues on the current path internet laws will be in nation's constitutions, but that will be a century or two. People with the benefits of hindsight will see the pros and cons, what needs to be protected and what needs to be protected against

Ads killed the internet.

I read an observation somewhere that I thought summed up people today in relation to their phones and the internet. It was something along the lines of "Everyone has the sum knowledge of the human race in the palm of their hand. They can find out everything about anything with a simple search. But what do they do with this power? Post pictures of their cats or their lunch."
