I floated the Frio River in Concan last time I was there and I absolutely loved it. It was a little bit of a drive but the scenery was awesome.

Yea, thats a long drive.....but it is great. I pretty much grew up summering on the frio. In SA, there are some great messican restaurants but you need to get away from the river walk. La Fonda if you want old school messican. Arcade for farm to table messican, El 7 Mares for seafood messican and Mixtili for nuevo messican. Hit Freetail brewery for great craft beer.

And I think if you read the history of the riverwalk you will appreciate it more. Especially the old, original part.

They have a great arboretum on the outskirts of san antonio if you like plants.

^^^^ thanks! Need advice on good food too.

Guenthers House again will get you laid, great breakfast place. Be willing to wait on the weekends because it gets packed.

Bier gardens was fun last time I went and its near the river walk, the mirror maze if you want to shoot the shite for a good 15 mins (near the alamo), I did a lot of drinking, bars, and restaurants.

Rosario’s Mexican Cafe Y Cantina- margaritas aren't that strong, gets really busy
Bohanan’-expensive but worth it
Paesanos- (Italian) food was alright, but I've never had great Italian before

See if there are any sports games going on, I went to a spurs game one night

Theres also a shopping center nearby.

Where are you staying?

The Austin obsession is strong on this board. If you enjoy terrible traffic and a scene with lots of college-aged kids, then go to Austin.

San Antonio is a great place to go. The Riverwalk is nice if you are going to eat at one of those restaurants. There is an extension of the Riverwalk that has recently been done that makes for a nice evening walk.

Tower of the Americas is nice.

Great thing about downtown is that you can walk anywhere and find what you want. There is great Mexican food, some good steakhouses, etc.

San Antonio has lots of history, ranging from the Alamo, to some historic hotels.

Outlet Malls in San Marcos may be good for the wife.

Yes, because he would be staying in Cedar Park and driving downtown while on vacation...

Yeah, I mean, if you're 55+ and live a relatively boring life...then SA is just for you.

Next stop...

Wife and I took a long weekend at Easter. We hit up the little village of shops and the park around the imitation space needle.

Visited natural bridge caverns on the outskirts of town. Did tours of both sections. They even have a zip line adventure and other activities.

I recommend eating at Rosario's which is outside the River Walk area: LINK

Austin traffic is terrible. I lived in Temple for a while. We went to every major city in Texas and the traffic in Austin was just miserable.

There are 4 other old missions in SA. They make up a national park. Google "San Antonio Missions Trail".

As far as a romantic quiet weekend SA is superior to fighting the crowds at overrated Austin bars and restaurants. Agree this board needs a reality check on Austin.

I enjoyed the Riverwalk a lot when I went. I would love to take my wife there. I was staying in that area so I can't tell you about much else.

I cannot remember the name of the place off hand but it's a steakhouse on the riverwalk that kind of looks like a old plantation house. I had a bone-in ribeye that made me see Jesus, it was very good.

Bohanan's Prime is a great choice for a steak downtown. Local place.

For a chain, high quality chain, with an endless amount of meat, go to Fogo de Chao. Considerably better than Texas de Brazil.

Why are y'all bringing up traffic?

I would imagine this would be a weekend getaway and, like I said, he'd be staying downtown anyway, so traffic would barely come into play. Also, yes, traffic can suck at times, but if you time it right - which he could do since he would be on vacation - it shouldn't be a big deal.

Spend a day doing the Alamo, riverwalk, & the Mexican market then get in your car & drive to Austin.

Go eat at the Boiler House.

The River Walk sucks aside from Bella on the River.

Get the bubbling swiss and the candy bar for desert at the Boiler House.

FTR I have a few customers there and am there every couple of weeks. Other than some pretty good restaurants San Antonio doesn't do it for me. I would take a drive north on i35 and check out the Buc-ees in New Braunsfels. It is insane.
