Have BR Zoo membership. Went no less than ~40 times in the year. I don’t think of it as a “zoo” so much as a nature trail with animals scattered along it.
Only thing I was ever concerned with was if an animal got out. Nobody would be around to save you. Its usually that desolate.

Leave the kevlar at home, but bring your calculator so you can attempt to add up where all the money is going. Bet you can't account for a quarter of it.

It's not terrible or unsafe but set your expectations low. It is many times better than the Jackson, MS zoo that is truly in the hood and has been closed for several months.

You won't even notice the "neighborhood". From Interstate to Zoo isn't bad at all.
